Course Description

This course provides a thorough study of basic accounting principles. Often called the “language of business,” accounting helps communicate meaningful financial information to individuals and organizations that rely on it to make informed decisions.  By the end of this course, you will gain essential accounting knowledge that can benefit you both personally and professionally.

Course Requirements

Homework Assignments:  All 11 homework assignments are completed through “Connect” accounting software and are due by 8:00 a.m. as noted in the syllabus. This course uses Inclusive Access: McGraw Hill Connect Online Access for the Text Financial Accounting by Spiceland, Thomas, Herrman, 6th Edition: Your Connect online platform contains the ebook, and all the reading, homework, and quizzes for the course, and is the required course material for each student. Connect is linked directly to our course in Canvas so that you have access to all required materials on day 1 of the course. All your scores for work done in Connect are automatically transferred to the gradebook in Canvas.

Iclicker Questions: Chapter quizzes will be administered in class through use of an iclicker app https://www.iclicker.com/students/apps-and-remotes/apps  There will be approximately 5-7 iclicker questions per chapter. 

Exams:The exams will be closed book and individual effort. All exams will be given in the Testing Center during the times outlined in the syllabus except the Final Exam which will be administered in class. Note: The SUU Testing Center is generally open from Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is not open on the weekends. They generally stop allowing students access one hour prior to closing times. 

Extra Credit Opportunities: There will be several opportunities for extra credit centered around career and professional development events hosted in the School of Business. All opportunities will be announced in class or on Canvas.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Attend class
– Arrive on time and stay for the full session. Consistent attendance is critical to understanding course material.
Prepare and practice – Read each chapter and complete all assigned homework. Mastery of accounting requires practice. No late homework accepted.
Ask questions – If something is unclear, speak up. Chances are others have the same question.
Be respectful – Please refrain from browsing, emailing, or gaming  on laptops or phones during class.

Seek support – Tutoring is available throughout the week. Take advantage of these resources if you need extra help.
Do your own work – You chose to be here. Don’t undermine your education by using someone else’s work or relying on unauthorized online platforms.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
