Course Description

Students will understand the “traditional” and “state of the art” accounting information systems (AIS). Students will better understand modeling processes, flowcharting and diagramming techniques, business information and information process rules, risks, controls and AIS designing techniques. Students will become knowledgeable of the classic transaction cycles (business processes), the attendant business activities, internal control mechanisms, documents, and persons of responsibility. Additionally, students will complete an intermediate-level QuickBooks case during the semester and a five-part data analytics case using Excel and Tableau.

Required Texts

You are required to purchase the Revel version of Romney, Steinbart, Summers, and Wood, Accounting Information Systems, 15e, for this course. We will use Revel for assigned reading, comprehension checks, and chapter quizzes. This course participates in Inclusive Access, which simplifies the purchase process and gives you automatic access on day one of the Class. The bookstore will automatically bill your student account and you will access the Text through the “Access Pearson” link on the class Canvas page (no access code required). 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  1. Apply Accounting information systems terminology.
  2. Read and create business process/ system documentation.
  3. Operate database structure and database management systems.
  4. Identify common risks and controls for business processes and accounting information systems.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency using accounting software tools.

Course Requirements

Acceptance into the School of Business OR permission from a School of Business advisor OR have an approved Accounting minor.

Course Outline

EXAMS
There will be two mid-semester exams. Exams are not cumulative, will be administered using proctoring software, and will consist of multiple-choice questions. Exams are closed book and closed note. Each exam is worth 120 points (240 points total), which accounts for 19% of your final grade.
 
QUICKBOOKS PROJECT
A key component of this course is applying accounting information systems concepts in a realistic setting. To do this, you will implement an accounting information system using Intuit’s QuickBooks, a package widely used by small and mid-sized businesses.This project includes several milestone assignments that build on each other. Timely completion of each milestone is essential, as later assignments depend on earlier ones. Most of the work will be completed during class, but the final portion will be completed outside of class. Due dates will be posted in Canvas. The QuickBooks project is worth 16% of your final grade.
  
REVEL ASSIGNMENTS
For each chapter we cover, you will complete a set of assignments in Revel. These include readings, comprehension checks, activities, and a chapter quiz. Each assignment is worth 20 points, for a total of 300 points across the semester (24% of your final grade).
 
EXTENSION ASSIGNMENTS
Extension assignments focus on applying course concepts beyond the textbook. Each assignment is worth 20 points, for a total of 140 points (11% of your final grade).
 
LECTURES
Each chapter is accompanied by a lecture video and related questions in Canvas. These questions are open-book, open-note, and open-lecture, and you may attempt them as many times as you’d like before the due date. Each lecture is worth 10 points, for a total of 160 points (13% of your final grade).
 
TECHWEAR CASE
You will also complete a multi-part case using Excel and Tableau. This project is designed to strengthen your Excel skills while introducing you to Tableau, a powerful data visualization tool. Tableau is free for students, and instructions for downloading it will be provided in Canvas. The Techwear case is worth 16% of your final grade.
 
EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit opportunities may be offered throughout the semester. Please note: extra credit will always be offered to the entire class, never to individual students.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

No late work will be accepted unless arranged with me in advance. You are responsible for letting me know that you will miss an assignment or other due date. You are also responsible for completing work before the due date. Only missed work due to university-sponsored absences will be allowed to be made up. 

Attendance Policy

As an asynchronous online course, physical attendance is neither required nor measured. Instead, participation will be measured through engagement with course lectures, assignments, and other components.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
