Course Description

A comprehensive study of horses and the economic impact of the horse industry. The biological basis for conformation and faults, reproduction, nutrition, behavior, and genetics will be examined as well as the economic importance of the horse industry.

Learning Outcomes

Students that successfully complete this course should be able to:
1.      Further develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic anatomy and physiology of members of the equine family.
2.      Apply scientific principles of health and disease, nutrition, reproduction, and genetics to the proper management of horses.
3.      Exhibit knowledge of economic impact and significance of equine industry, industry issues and history and development of the horse. 

Course Requirements

·         Class participation is highly encouraged and makes up a considerable portion of your grade. Regular class attendance is expected.  Please be on time and non-disruptive.  You are expected to have read assigned chapters and be familiar with material to be covered on the day the information will be discussed.  Students are responsible for all material discussed in class, whether in attendance or not.  It is your responsibility to obtain notes from missed classes from someone other than the instructor. 
·         Lecture outlines, PowerPoints, and recorded lectures will be posted on Canvas. Other information including the syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc. will also be posted.  Please use Canvas or my phone to contact me.
·         Class assignments are to be submitted through Canvas on specified due dates.  Late assignments will not be accepted.
Computers, cell phones or other electronic devices may only be used if they contribute to the class, as deemed by the instructor.  Please turn off the ringer and vibration on your cell phone during class time.  Please refer to the Agriculture and Nutrition Department Appropriate Student Use of Technology in the Classroom Policy (https://www.suu.edu/cose/agns/device-policy.html) for more information.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

 Late assignments will not be accepted. Class assignments are to be submitted through Canvas on specified due dates.

Attendance Policy

Class participation is highly encouraged and makes up a considerable portion of your grade. Regular class attendance is expected.  Please be on time and non-disruptive.  You are expected to have read assigned chapters and be familiar with material to be covered on the day the information will be discussed.  Students are responsible for all material discussed in class, whether in attendance or not.  It is your responsibility to obtain notes from missed classes from someone other than the instructor.

There will be three examinations given on Canvas in addition to a comprehensive final exam (see projected course outline for dates).  Questions on exams will be from lectures, guest lecturers, assignments, required readings, videos, and text. A comprehensive final exam will be given during finals week.  The final exam is not optional. The score on the final exam may replace the lowest exam score.  

Course Fees

There are no additional course fees for this course.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
