Course Description

Supervised work experience in any art- and design-related field. To be arranged with an Art & Design instructor. May be repeated twice. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Pass/Fail] Prerequisite(s): Instructor permission Repeatable for Add’l Credit? Yes - Total Credits: 12

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, students will be able to:

  1. Apply professional knowledge and creative skills from their academic program to real-world projects within an internship setting.

  2. Demonstrate professional behaviors and workplace competencies, including communication, collaboration, and accountability, in alignment with industry standards.

  3. Critically reflect on their internship experience through documentation and an ePortfolio, articulating how the internship contributed to their professional growth and future career goals.

Course Requirements

1. Secure an Internship

  • Explore opportunities through Handshake, company career pages, SUU resources (Professional Internship Program, Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative, Leavitt Center Internships, T-Bird Campus Jobs), faculty contacts, and SUU alumni.

  • Network directly with employers and apply for internships aligned with your professional interests.

  • Obtain approval from your Academic Internship Coordinator before beginning the internship.

2. Register for Academic Credit

  • Complete the SUU Internship Application with your Site Supervisor and Internship Coordinator before starting the internship.

  • If using the PDF form, submit the signed agreement to the Registrar’s Office.

  • Meet eligibility requirements: minimum 2.5 GPA and at least 30 completed undergraduate credits.

3. Set Internship Goals

  • Identify three professional goals for your internship in consultation with your Faculty Supervisor.

  • Record these goals in your ePortfolio at the beginning of the internship.

4. Document Weekly Progress

  • Track and document your hours and responsibilities (approx. 45 work hours = 1 academic credit, unless otherwise determined by your department).

  • Submit weekly progress updates in your ePortfolio, demonstrating how your activities connect to your goals and professional development.

5. Conclude with a Reflection Paper

  • At the end of the internship, submit a reflection paper in your ePortfolio that:

    • Evaluates your overall experience.

    • Assesses your progress on the three goals you set.

    • Identifies key skills, insights, and connections gained.

  • Ensure your site supervisor submits a final evaluation directly to your Faculty Supervisor.

6. Grading & Credit

  • Internships for credit are graded Pass/Fail.

  • Students must select the number of credits they are taking at the time of registration. A maximum of 12 internship credits may apply toward your major/minor (some departments may allow fewer).

Course Outline

Pre-Enrollment Requirement

  • Students must secure an approved internship and complete the SUU Internship Application prior to enrolling in the course.
  • Students can enroll in this course throughout the first half of the semester as long as there are enough remaining weeks to accomplish the amount of work hours required by their credit load. If a student starts later than the first week, they will still be required to complete the ePortfolio, and goals assignments. 

Week 1

  • Read and acknowledge understanding of the course syllabus and requirements.

  • Identify and record three internship goals in the ePortfolio.

Week 2

  • Submit a working link to the ePortfolio.

Week 3

  • Record and submit internship hours-to-date (progress toward required credit hours).

Weeks 4–7

  • Post weekly progress updates in the ePortfolio, documenting hours, responsibilities, and connections to internship goals.

Week 8 (Mid-Semester Check-In)

  • Meet or correspond with the Faculty Supervisor.

  • Report any unexpected situations or challenges.

  • Ask questions or request feedback as needed.

Weeks 9–14

  • Continue posting weekly progress updates in the ePortfolio.

Week 15 (Final Week)

  • Resubmit the completed ePortfolio link.

  • Ensure the ePortfolio contains:

    • Weekly progress logs.

    • Final reflection statement evaluating the internship experience and progress on goals.

  • Confirm that the employer has submitted a final evaluation letter to the Faculty Supervisor.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

All required documentation for this course, which includes an ePortfolio, a reflection paper, and a review form from the intern's supervisor, are due before the end of the semester. Failure to turn in any of these documents will result in a grade of "fail". 

Attendance Policy

This is an online course. Attendance is not required, but communicating through digital means with the instructor during the first week, at mid term, and during the final week are required.

Course Fees

$19.00 per credit
This is a variable credit course. Total fees will be based on the number of credit a student signs up for

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
