Course Description

The purpose of this laboratory is to give you some hands-on learning of the concepts that are discussed in lecture. It is intended for the lecture and lab to reinforce one another. Every effort will be made to match up topics in laboratory with when they are presented in lecture; however, this is not always possible.

Required Texts

The laboratory manual and instructions will be provided electronically (Canvas) and/or in lab.

Learning Outcomes

  • gain further understanding of physiological concepts presented in the lecture
  • apply physiological concepts in experimental situations
  • learn and practice physiological measurement techniques

Course Requirements

Co-Requisite: BIOL 2420 Human Physiology

Laboratory Setting:

  • Students are required to use the equipment and supplies as described/demonstrated by the instructor.
  • No Equipment may leave the laboratory.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the laboratory.
  • CDC Blood Sampling Protocols will be followed for the “Blood Lab”. (see separate document in Canvas)

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Lab Reports are due 1 week following the lab. Reports are docked 1 point for each day they are past due.

Attendance Policy

Labs provide practical, hands on learning of not only information, but also techniques. There is no way to make up for the lost experience. Plus, all labs count for points which you can’t get if you’re not there.

If you have to miss a lab, you can attend one of the other lab sections that same week:

  • You must contact the other instructor first to ask permission to attend
  • You must take the other instructor’s lab quiz (proof that you attended)
  • You will also take, and only be graded on, my lab quiz
  • You may not turn in the lab assignment if you did not attend that lab.
  • Only the computer simulation labs can be made up, outside of a regular lab section, if missed.

Grading

  • The lab grade will be separate from the lecture grade.
  • Each lab exercise is with 10 points.
  • There will be a 10 point quiz each week. 
The grading scale is as follows: (no curve)
100-92.5% = A
92.4-89.5% = A-
89.4-86.5% = B+
86.4-82.5% = B
82.4-79.5% = B-
79.4-76.5% = C+
76.4-72.5% = C
72.4-69.5% = C-
69.4-66.5% = D+
66.4-62.5% = D
62.4-59.5% = D-
59.4% and below = F
*There is no form of extra credit*

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
