Course Description

The course emphasizes research appropriate for understanding, data gathering and analysis in various communication settings. An emphasis is placed on message analysis, interviewing, surveys, focus groups, content analysis, social marketing methods, and experimental design. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): COMM 3100 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C-

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to effectively write a background (introduction and literature review) section for an academic research paper. 
  • Learn how to plan, prepare, and collect data for a qualitative research project. 
  • Learn how to use SPSS to analyze quantitative research data. 

Course Requirements

  • Background Research Paper: Students will complete a series of 11 small assignments that
culminate in a comprehensive research introduction and literature review. They will learn how to
write academically and find appropriate sources.
  • Qualitative Research Project: Students will complete 14 small assignments that culminate in a
completed qualitative results and discussion section based on email interviews gathered by the
students themselves.
  • Quantitative Analysis Skills: Students will complete 13 small assignments and a final exam
teaching them how to use SPSS to analyze numerical data.

Course Outline

  • Unit 1 - Background Research: Unit 1 teaches students how to analyze academic sources, and
write meaningful introductions, justification, and literature reviews for academic research.
  • Unit 2 - Qualitative Research: Unit 2 teaches students how to properly conduct qualitative
research by giving them hands-on experience completing their own project.
  • Unit 3 - Quantitative Research: Unit 3 teaches students how to analyze and interpret
quantitative data using SPSS statistical software.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

  • All late work will receive an automatic 20% deduction. Each additional week that the assignment is late, an additional 20% will be deducted. For example, if an assignment is 1-day late, the highest score you can receive is 80%. If the assignment is more than 1-week late, the highest score that you can receive is 60%, and so on. This late policy will be enforced regardless of the urgency, legitimacy, and seriousness of the excuse given. You can work as far ahead as you'd like to prevent last minute issues and events from creating problems. No extensions will be given ahead of time.
  • Occasionally, students will submit files that are corrupted, blank, unreadable, accidental duplicates of past work, etc. It is your responsibility as the student, not mine, to ensure that this doesn’t happen. If you submit a file that I cannot grade, it will be considered unsubmitted and the resubmission will be considered late. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Two ways you can prevent this from happening are to 1) submit PDFs, and 2) always double check your work after you’ve submitted. 
  • Any use of artificial intelligence software (A.I.), including visual (e.g. Midjourney), textual (e.g. chatGPT), or audio (e.g. voice.ai) to aid on assignments will be considered an infringement of academic integrity. Unless explicitly designated and outlined in assignment instructions, students should avoid using these aids, entirely. All faculty have access to CopyLeaks which detects plagiarism, including the use of AI software. Consequences for violating this policy are consistent with SUU Policy 6.33 regarding academic integrity, and may include a failing grade in the course, and expulsion from the program.
  • Students will occasionally request an I (Incomplete) near the end of the semester for a variety of reasons. An Incomplete can only be given if these three circumstances have been met. 1) Student has completed over 75% of the required coursework. 2) Student has attended over 75% of classes (not applicable in this online class). 3) Student has experienced a documentable crisis or event that will prevent them from finishing the coursework by the end of the semester. If these three circumstances have been met, we can discuss the possibility of an Incomplete.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
