Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the key trends of auditing corporate information systems including multiple operating systems and system roles. (Fall - 2nd Session) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): CSIA students only or program director permission.

Required Texts

This course does not have a textbook. All the resources including reading materials and voice of PowerPoint will be provided on the canvas shell. The content provided is linked with the subject matter of the course. The following book is also referred as a resource and available for free through O'Reilly Books. 
  • IT Auditing: Using Controls to Protect Information Assets, 978-1-26-045323-2, by Davis, Chris; Schiller, Mike; and Wheeler, Kevin, 3rd Edition.  

Learning Outcomes


By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Examine the principles and concepts of cybersecurity auditing
  2. Identify and assess risk factors
  3. Develop and implement effective cybersecurity auditing strategies
  4. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of security controls
  5. Communicate cybersecurity risks and recommendations effectively




Course Requirements

This course will assess students' knowledge with assignments. They will be weekly assignments which will include discussion amongst groups and individual report. The topics and assignments will include the principles and concepts, and auditing strategies discussions. They will be 7 weekly assignments and one final report. 



Course Outline

The topics in this course include.
  • Principles and concept of cybersecurity auditing (Learning objectives are to identify and discuss principles and concepts of cybersecurity), 
  • Risks factors (learning objectives are Define risk in the context of cybersecurity auditing; discuss risk factors and how to assess them and demonstrate how to assess risk factors).
  • Auditing strategies (the learning objectives are to identify and discuss effective cybersecurity auditing strategies and create an audit plan to implement for a data center).
  • Auditing, analyzing controls and reporting (the learning objectives are to demonstrate the basic of understanding of windows fundamentals and effectiveness of Linux security windows).
  • Auditing cybersecurity function (the learning objectives are to identify and exploit broken access controls and vulnerabilities and web applications and implement and report cybersecurity audit). 

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work


Late assignments will not be accepted.
As this is an online course, your attendance will be measured by your participation and completion of course activities.
Exams missed because of illness; a university approval absence or /and absence approved in advance by the instructor can be made up by convenient to the instructor. In all other cases, no credit will be given on all late assignments.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
