Course Description

This course focuses on macroeconomic analysis and its role in understanding the overall macroeconomic performance of any economy. This course provides students with a sound knowledge and understanding of basic economic concepts and methods of economic analysis, with emphasis on modern macroeconomics, with its application to theoretical and real-world problems. The SUU course description is “Principles of Macroeconomics introduces measurements of national economic performance: GDP, interest, inflation, and unemployment rates. Develop a model to describe the economic situation and to present the options available to policymakers. Discusses the institutions and constraints that frame policy. International economic issues and the relation of the U.S. economy to the global economy are then examined”.

Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers (2023). Principles of Macroeconomics, 2nd Edition. The publisher is Macmillan Learning. 

Learning Outcomes

After the completion of this course, students are expected to acquire the ability to develop analytical skills using diagrams and simple mathematics to analyze and understand macroeconomic issues. In addition, they are expected to do the following: 
·       Distinguish the difference between microeconomics and macroeconomics and their diversified economic tools. 
·       Estimate and analyze macroeconomic variables such as Gross Domestic Product, unemployment rate, inflation rate, balance of                       payments, and exchange rates. 
·       Understand what determines the macroeconomic performance of an economy.
·       Understand the role of government policy in an economy to achieve its macroeconomic objectives.
·       Explain economic issues through an application of basic macroeconomic principles.
·       Recognize how to efficiently use available economic resources through aggregate demand and aggregate supply, and their equilibrium. 
·       Analyze trade patterns using the concept of comparative advantage and evaluate how government policies affect trade.
·       Develop a good understanding of relevant economic issues and be able to think like a budding economist.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

 No late homework/ Quizzes will be accepted. However, the late submissions of HW/Quiz will be accepted by the instructor upon valid reasons. 
There are no make-up exams. In case you miss any exam, your absence will be excused upon submission of supporting documents such as a medical certificate or official SUU approval. Acceptance of such documents is at the discretion of the instructor.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is not mandatory. Students are highly encouraged to attend classes regularly in order to be onboard with the rest of the class. It has been seen that students who attended classes regularly performed well in the course.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
