Course Description

This course critically examines what Culturally Responsive Teaching is and the ways in which we can embody this methodology in educational settings. Throughout the course of the semester we will progress from analyzing the self as an individual to analyzing our roles as educators working within a larger system. The aim of this course is to develop culturally responsive educators who can effectively leverage the skills, backgrounds, and identities of a diverse population of learners in a wide variety of educational settings.  (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] 

Required Texts

There is no required textbook for this class. All readings will be posted on Canvas. Students will not be required to purchase or locate any materials.

Learning Outcomes

In our efforts to become more culturally responsive teachers we will:
  • Analyze our own identities and personal beliefs about education
  • Outline specific teaching strategies that can be used to create a safe, inclusive learning environment for a diverse population of learners.
  • Research the contextual factors of a given school and describe how these factors influence student learning.
  • Consider how policies, procedures, and ways of thinking influence educational settings
  • Critically evaluate curricular resources and materials
  • Successfully and effectively leverage student backgrounds, identities, and cultures in the classroom.

Course Requirements

  • Journal Responses (reading provided materials and responding to question prompts)
  • School Tracking Assignment (reviewing articles and preparing a presentation about the dangers of tracking and alternatives to this practice)
  • Contextual Factors Assignment (completing 3 tables of information about a selected school and writing an essay to analyze the information)
  • Funds of Knowledge Presentation (presentation connecting provided content to modern media resources)
  • Calendar Presentation (presentation highlighting different holidays/awareness months)
  • Text Analysis Task (selecting and analyzing curricular materials)
  • Weekly Module Assignments
  • Class Take-away File (recording learning, insights, and questions from modules)
  • Class Attendance and Participation



Course Outline

Part 1: Analyzing Self. In the first part of the class we will explore what culturally responsive teaching is and why it is important. We will also analyze our own identities and explore our personal beliefs about teaching and learning.

Part 2: Analyzing Schools. In the second part of the course we will explore strategies that we can utilize as educators to ensure that the needs of all students are being met and that the assets that each student brings to the classroom are leveraged effectively to make learning more relevant and meaningful.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Assignments are due on the assigned day, and possibly at a particular time if specified. Generally, the default due date and time in Canvas will be utilized. Canvas will be used to determine if assignments are on-time or late. If assignments are not submitted, Canvas will automatically place a “0” grade in the gradebook. All late assignments will be penalized: 10% for one minute to 48 hours late; 20% for 48 hours to 2 weeks; and 50% for anything later than two weeks.  No late work will be accepted the last two weeks of the semester without permission (so get it turned in before then).

Attendance Policy

Class Attendance is Required. If you are registered for a Face-to-Face, Synchronous Remote, Hybrid, or Remote Hybrid course, attendance is required. If you are ill or instructed to isolate or quarantine, you may request a faculty member record the class and share it with you or you may request other reasonable accommodations. Your instructor will work with you to develop a plan for completing coursework while you are isolated/quarantined. In order for you to receive academic accommodations and ensure that your request is communicated to faculty, you must submit this self report form.
Attendance will be taken each synchronous class meeting using an attendance quiz on Canvas (the quizzes also assess student preparation for class). No attendance is taken for asynchronous (online) classes since there is no fixed meeting for these sections. However, online sections will also have two weekly “attendance” quizzes (called “lecture reflection”) that assess understanding of each weekly course module.  

Course Fees

There are no additional course fees associated with this course.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

SUU is operated for the common good of the greater community it serves. The common good depends upon the free search for truth and its free exposition. Academic Freedom is the right of faculty to study, discuss, investigate, teach, and publish. Academic Freedom is essential to these purposes and applies to both teaching and research.

Academic Freedom in the realm of teaching is fundamental for the protection of the rights of the faculty member and of you, the student, with respect to the free pursuit of learning and discovery. Faculty members possess the right to full freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects. They may present any controversial material relevant to their courses and their intended learning outcomes, but they shall take care not to introduce into their teaching controversial materials which have no relation to the subject being taught or the intended learning outcomes for the course.

As such, students enrolled in any course at SUU may encounter topics, perspectives, and ideas that are unfamiliar or controversial, with the educational intent of providing a meaningful learning environment that fosters your growth and development. These parameters related to Academic Freedom are included in SUU Policy 6.6.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.

Emergency Management Statement

University policy (SUU Policy 5.60) requires instructors to report disclosures received from students that indicate they have been subjected to sexual misconduct/harassment. The University defines sexual harassment consistent with Federal Regulations (34 C.F.R. Part 106, Subpart D) to include quid pro quo, hostile environment harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. When students communicate this information to an instructor in-person, by email, or within writing assignments, the instructor will report that to the Title IX Coordinator to ensure students receive support from the Title IX Office.
