Course Description

The Educational Leadership Internship Proposal provides documentation of USBE-mandated artifacts created in a field experience in a K-12 educational setting under the supervision of a Mentor Principal and an Internship Coordinator. This course is available to admitted graduate students only. Students must first obtain approval from their Program Coordinator and apply for, and be admitted into an Educational Leadership Intern position before registration. (Fall, Spring) [Pass/Fail]

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of educational leadership theories and practices to effectively shape school culture, initiate meaningful change, and develop shared values within diverse educational settings.
  • Create and implement a strategic internship proposal that aligns with individual leadership goals, institutional objectives, and broader educational standards, ensuring a clear pathway toward leadership growth and organizational development.
  • Analyze and apply the Utah Education Leader and Praxis 5431 Standards in the development of an ePortfolio that highlights personal competencies, leadership achievements, and professional growth.
  • Develop a professional ePortfolio that serves as both an assessment tool and a job-seeking resource, incorporating evidence of competencies in leadership, culture-building, change management, and continuous professional development.
  • Articulate a vision and purpose as an educational leader that guides professional practice, influences change, and fosters an environment of collaboration, reflection, and growth among staff and stakeholders.
  • Apply effective strategies for collaboration and team-building in educational settings, fostering relationships that empower others and align efforts toward common goals and institutional improvement.

Course Requirements

  1. Complete and submit all assignments by the due date.  
2. Read all assigned readings by the date assigned to be prepared for discussions.
3. Participate in the online discussions through Canvas.  Due to the nature of an online discussion, discussion assignments cannot be “made up” if missed.  Not participating in online discussions will result in a loss of points which will negatively impact the final grade.
4. Complete other assignments as required.
5. Complete all assessments as required.
6.     You must participate synchronously or asynchronously in Zoom Seminars to receive full credit - A recording will be available for those who have made arrangements with the instructor prior to the session because of extenuating circumstances.
7. Demonstrate professional behavior, including but not limited to the following, to earn the disposition grade:
- Model effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Use good written communication skills, i.e., good spelling and grammar.
- Demonstrate respect for the views and opinions of others.
- Meet deadlines and due dates, be prompt and on time.
- Submit quality work and demonstrate preparedness for class activities.
- Honor the academic integrity policy.


Course Outline

EDUC 6930 Educational Leadership Internship Proposal examines the goals and objectives for individual leaders and groups of collaborators to shape culture, initiate change, and develop shared values. As a culminating activity, all graduates of the M.Ed. at Southern Utah University are expected to create and develop an ePortfolio that provides evidence of competency for each of the Utah Education Leader and Praxis 5431 Standards. In addition to demonstrating competence against the standards, this portfolio will serve as a job-seeking tool. At its core, this course is designed to provide you with a sense of direction, commitment, purpose and vision that drives your performance and continuous improvement as a school leader.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Faculty members possess the right to full freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects. They may present any controversial material relevant to their courses and their intended learning outcomes, but they shall take care not to introduce into their teaching controversial materials which have no relation to the subject being taught or the intended learning outcomes for the course.

As such, students enrolled in any course at SUU may encounter topics, perspectives, and ideas that are unfamiliar or controversial, with the educational intent of providing a meaningful learning environment that fosters your growth and development. Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
