Course Description

The second of the GE writing courses emphasizes the development of an effective academic style in argumentative essays that makes use of traditional rhetorical patterns, culminating in a major research paper. Subtopics will vary. Students with ACT English scores below 29 must take ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1010E before enrolling in 2010. Required Texts

Obtain the following required materials as soon as possible (available at the SUU Book Store or online retailers):

  • Sous Chef: 24 Hours on the Line by Michael Gibney (ISBN 978-0804177894)
  • Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley (ISBN 978-1596436237)
  • Hallelujah! The Welcome Table by Maya Angelou (ISBN 978-0812974850)

Film requirement: The documentary film SOMM (access via the link in the assignment description or SUU’s Kanopy streaming service).

All other readings will be provided through Canvas.

Learning Outcomes

  • Genre Awareness: Demonstrate critical and conceptual awareness of genre in reading and writing—including organization, content, presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices.
  • Context and Purpose: Analyze rhetorical situations and adapt to the audience, purpose, modalities, and the circumstances surrounding a range of reading and writing tasks.
  • Language Awareness and Usage: Recognize and make intentional, critical, and contextually informed language choices across a range of rhetorical contexts/situations.
  • Recursive Writing Processes: Develop flexible, iterative, and reflective processes for invention, drafting, workshopping, and revision.

Course Requirements

Essays and Submissions

All essays are submitted through Canvas as Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) or .pdf files. Work submitted in an incorrect file type may be subject to late work penalties. If exporting from Google Docs, double-check formatting after upload. All three major essays must be submitted to pass the class.

Major Assignments
  • Personal Evaluation/Critical Self Evaluation Essay (20%): A reflective essay examining your connection to food and drink—why and how you eat, and your impact on the surrounding food culture.
  • Critical Analysis (20%): Analyze a cultural topic of food within a larger context, incorporating formal research and appropriate sources.
  • Research Paper (30%): An argument on contemporary food issues that provides context; analyzes relevant primary sources; and integrates, analyzes, and documents secondary sources.
Other Components
  • Discussions (15%): For full weekly credit, make 1 substantive original post during the initial window (Monday–Tuesday, 11:59 pm MST; aim for at least 100 words) and at least 3 substantive replies to classmates spread over the rest of the week. “Likes” can signal acknowledgment but do not replace required comments. Regular check-ins are expected to sustain back-and-forth discussion.
  • Critical Responses (15%): Personal responses to readings, prompts, and rhetorical activities. Length varies by assignment (generally about 2 pages, double spaced). Submit via Canvas.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late Work
Late work is not accepted. Assignments and discussions open and close at specific times in Canvas; closing times are announced in advance and visible in Canvas. Plan accordingly and ensure you are comfortable uploading and accessing items on Canvas. While late work may be considered on a case-by-case basis, discussion activities cannot be made up due to their interaction-based grading.

Attendance Policy

Because this is an online course, physical attendance is not required. Attendance is measured through participation in weekly discussion groups. Failure to participate in more than two discussion groups over the semester will significantly impact the overall course grade.

Writing Center

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
