Details concerning Course Requirements:
Active Participation in class: This is a face to face class, meaning you are expected to attend class unless you are sick or have had a Covid exposure. Students should remain engaged in all class activities and discussions, speak French except when a question in English is absolutely necessary, and take notes on new material and information.
Daily homework: Homework is due through Canvas before class each day. Homework will be graded based on attention to and application of rules and course materials. Homework handed in late, except in case of illness or other expressed and justifiable reason, will result in a lower grade; later the same day -25%, the following day -50% etc. Students may choose to fill in exercises directly on the page and upload images of the completed exercises, or they may choose to write answers on a separate page. In the latter case, it will be important to label the exercises by chapter, page, and number in order to facilitate my giving feedback.
Written exams / Examens: There will be 4 written exams, one every 2 topics. Make-ups will be allowed with appropriate notice (and for justifiable reasons).
Quizzes / Interros: There will be daily quizzes administered in class but through the Canvas quiz function. Quizzes are similar to Exams but more limited in scope and are meant to encourage memorization. I will drop 20% of quiz grades. Therefore, if you miss a quiz because you miss class, you can drop that grade. This will eliminate the need for make-up quizzes. This rule will apply to all quizzes missed due to all circumstances.
Oral Exams: There will be a mid-term oral exam and a final oral exam. To prepare for oral exams throughout the semester, practice speaking on a regular basis in class and remain engaged in class, as exposure is the best pronunciation aid and general learning tool. Listening to French is the road to what we call acquisition, that is, unconscious learning through exposure; this is how much is learned (in this case we actually say acquired) about pronunciation.
