Course Description

Through this course students will explore advanced principles and techniques related to healthcare accounting and financial management. The primary objective of this course is for students to be able to apply administrative/managerial knowledge and the related accounting/financial theory and techniques within today’s healthcare marketplace. (Fall - 2nd Session, Spring - 1st Session) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): BA 6000 and HCA 6100 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C Registration Restriction(s): MBA majors and MSBA majors only

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Summarize the key methodologies utilized by payers to reimburse providers, including facility and professional components.
  2. Describe the unique characteristics of healthcare financial statements.
  3. Utilize cost behavior, profit analysis, project risk analysis, financial planning and budgeting, and service line costing and pricing.
  4. Explain the revenue cycle management process and the challenges associated with it.
  5. Solve a wide range of real life case studies related to healthcare financial management.

There will be a quiz at the end of each module.

Case Studies & Reports
Case studies require the student to think creatively to solve real-world situations. I expect you to take a very active role in your learning process. Each case requires you to synthesize the given information, define the problem, and propose the solution. You will have to implement one or more quantitative and/or qualitative analysis techniques. Use of Microsoft Excel is necessary in most cases.  Case reports are 60% of your overall grade, so please put a significant amount of time and effort into your group's report. I will be looking for quality of analysis, creativity, and a clear recommendation. While there are 7 case studies in this course and you will complete all of them, your lowest score will be dropped so only 6 of the 7 case studies will count towards your final grade. However, all 7 case studies must still be completed, even though the lowest grade will dropped.

Group Peer Reviews
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage participation from every group member.  You will be asked to completely fill out a survey form which will allow you to give each of your group members a participation score.  Peer Review assignments each count for 15% of your grade. While there are 7 group peer reviews in this course and you will complete all of them, your lowest score will be dropped so only 6 of the 7 case group peer reviews will count towards your final grade.

All assignments must be submitted by the due date unless prior permission has be granted by the instructor to turn the work in late.

Make-Up Work/Extra Credit
There is not extra credit or make up work.

As this is on online course, your attendance will be measured by your participation and completion of course activities.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.
