Course Description

The fundamentals of American history including political, economic, and social development of American institutions and ideas. Successful completion of this course meets the American Institutions requirement established by the state legislature. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): Intensive English Program majors may not enroll General Education Category: American Institutions

Required Texts

The textbook selected for this course is A Documentary History of the United States Expanded and Updated Tenth Edition edited by Richard D. Heffner. The text can be purchased through the inclusive access feature on canvas or online.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students will be able to demonstrate skills with the following:

·         Use of Primary Documents–analyze, contextualize, and use primary source documents to understand the history, principles, form of government, and economic system of the United States.

·         Interpretation–explain and use historically, politically, and economically relevant information.

·         Communication–communicate effectively about the history, principles, form of government, and economic system of the United States.

·         Diversity–engage a diversity of viewpoints in a constructive manner that contributes to a dialogue about the history, principles, form of government, and economic system of the United States.

·         Integration–use historical, political, and economic methods to come to an understanding of the United States that integrates those viewpoints.

Course Outline

This course is an introductory survey of United States history aimed at students who are new to college or new to the university-level study of history. Besides providing a clear chronology of events and explaining their historical significance, this course will balance lectures and media experiences in an effort to expose the student to the diversity of historical events and the difficulty in interpreting the past. Successful completion of this course will fulfill basic degree and graduation requirements, including the American Government and Institutions Requirement, and you will gain a firm foundation for further study in history and related fields.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Students are expected to submit original and independent work; students who plagiarize will be subjected to the most severe academic penalties. Late papers will receive a penalty of at least one full letter grade.  ALL WORK SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON CANVAS.

Attendance Policy

Each week, you will earn attendance points for this class. A specific day will be randomly selected, and if you are present on that day, you will receive the points for that week. Over the course of the semester, these attendance points will account for 20% of your final grade.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
