Course Description

Students will delve deeper into interpersonal portions of leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. Students will begin to develop and apply their own individual expertise. Learning Outcomes


By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Develop and apply strategic  leadership knowledge and skills in decision making, problem solving and people management.
  2. Develop and apply effective communication skills by having self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

  3. Cultivate  and apply a strategic, growth and clear thinking mindset.
  4. Develop and apply leadership ability to achieve superior  organizational performance.
  5. Develop knowledge and skills in designing a SWOT analysis and strategic planning.
  6. Cultivate and develop the collaborative and strategic leadership teams and implementation skills.
  7. Create and improve leadership e-portfolio over the duration of the course.

Course Requirements

Content


Each week has readings and other learning materials (PowerPoints, videos, websites). Please make sure you read and/or watch the learning materials, in order to do well in the class.

1 - Introduction


Please spend a fair amount of time to become acquainted with your colleagues in this class. It is very important, together we become a learning community over the next several weeks. Make your classmates a part of your life as you offer and receive learning.

2 - Weekly Assignments


Each week, application activities will be offered to help students connect readings with their growth as strategic leaders. These assignments may will take the form of papers, group assignments, and video presentations. Directions and grading expectations will be given each week as part of the application assignments. 


A final project will ask students to choose a book about an American company that either succeeded or failed fantastically and apply strategic leadership theories to explain its rise and/or fall. This project will take the form of a video presentation accompanied by a Powerpoint presentation.


Additionally, students will create a combined Strategic Plan/SWOT analysis -

  • Strategic Plan: By employing your strategic mindset, develop a strategic plan for your business or an organization, which will include short-term and long-term goals and implementation plan to achieve your goals.
  • SWOT Analysis: To understand the influence SWOT analysis has on making and achieving goals, produce a one-page of SWOT analysis of an organization, including all the components of SWOT: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats and each component includes internal and external factors. 

3 - Virtual Discussion Boards 


Virtual Discussions are ways to build our online community and learn together. They will be held TH nights from 7-8 pm over zoom. They will also be recorded for those who cannot make it. Follow any additional instructions provided in Canvas modules. Each discussion will be worth 10 points. 

4 - e-Portfolio

Most weeks we will be adding to our professional e-portfolio. Drafts of the e-Portfolio will be due first where you will receive feedback from the instructor before the final e-Portfolio is due. Drafts of the e-Portfolio and the final e-Portfolio will be worth a total of 125 points.

5. Strategic Leadership Presentation: Students will develop a video presentation utilizing Powerpoint or related program analyzing the strategic leadership of a well-known and profitable corporation. This presentation will be uploaded to Canvas during the final week of the course.

Attendance Policy

There are no required scheduled meeting times for this course as it is online and asynchronous. While there will be meetings, if you are not able to attend you will be able to view a recording of the meeting and complete a short assignment to receive credit for attendance. 

Course Fees

Course/Tech Fees: This course has a $15/credit technology fee which pays for instructional design support, faculty training sessions, learner support, and learning technologies (like Canvas) at SUU.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
