An emphasis is placed on etymology, definition, pronunciation, and correct utilization of medical terms associated with diseases, disorders, conditions, medical equipment, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. The course is intended to enable students interested in health care professions to develop a vocabulary essential to understanding and communicating within these professions. (Fall, Spring, Summer [As Needed]) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): Intensive English Program majors may not enroll

Required Texts

Students will purchase a subscription to an online learning system/e-textbook, Medical Terminology, Caduceus International Publishing.  The subscription can be purchased within the Canvas shell for this course and it is a “lifetime” subscription so you may use it as a resource as you continue forward with your education. Simply log into your Canvas account and select the KIN 2010 course shell, click on the “Assignments” section on the menu to the left (or from the course homepage) and search for the first Caduceus assignment “Orientation”. Follow the prompts to register for the course.  Once you have gained access to the course, you will be redirected to the first assignment. After completing the lecture assignment in full, the completion grade will SYNC back to your Canvas grade book. Close the browser tab, navigate back to your assignment and choose the next activity in the chapter. All assignments must be completed in full and completed in order before you can proceed to the next chapter. If you need help registering within your Canvas platform,, review the “Registration Guide” document posted on Canvas, email support@cipcourses.com or call 866-280-2900 M-F 8am-5pm EST for help.

Course Requirements

Course Evaluations:
  1. Participation 25 pts
  2. Chapter Quizzes 25 pts
  3. Mid-term Exam 20 pts
  4. Final Exam 30 pts TOTAL 100 pts

  1. Participation: Your online textbook provides content and learning activities from chapters 1-15. Note that chapters 5 and 15 only consist of learning activities, and chapter 1 only includes introduction lectures. Chapter content is delivered via audio-visual lecture presentations and learning activities (flashcards, self-tests, & hear-and-say). You will be required to successfully complete all lectures and learning activities for each of these chapters by the assigned due date to earn full participation points (See individual Canvas assignment pages, Canvas calendar and/or the "course summary" in the syllabus). Flashcards are intended to provide an opportunity for you to “interact” and apply what you are learning in each chapter. Hear-and-say activities help you learn to pronounce selected medical terms. Self-test quizzes represent low-stakes testing intended for self-assessment and learning. The self-test quizzes can be completed as many times as you would like. Furthermore, the self-test quiz questions make up the bank of questions from which all other tests are generated (chapter quizzes, mid-term & final exams). Thus completing the self-test quizzes is intended to prepare you for upcoming quizzes and exams. The portion of participation points you receive will directly correspond to the number of participation activities that you successfully complete. Uncompleted learning activities will not receive points and will contribute to a lower grade.
  2. Chapter Quizzes: Chapters 2-4 and 6-14 each include a 24 question timed chapter quiz which you must complete. The questions for each chapter quiz are generated from the bank of questions found in the corresponding chapter self-test quiz. You must complete each chapter quiz online prior to the assigned due date (please remember to enter Caduceus via Canvas; see e-textbook instructions below). There is a twelve minute time limit for each chapter quiz. Make sure you have prepared yourself by reviewing the chapter self-test quiz as many times as necessary before you take the timed quiz.
  3. Exams: You will be required to complete a mid-term and final exam (Chapter 16). The mid-term exam will consist of 100 questions related to the chapters completed prior to the exam due date (1-8). The final exam will be comprehensive and will consist of 200 questions. The questions for both exams are generated from the bank of questions from the chapter self-test quizzes. You may complete the exams exams at any time prior to the assigned due date. There is a time limit for each exam (1 hour for mid-term & 2 hours for final). Please plan accordingly, and make sure you have prepared yourself by reviewing the chapter self-test quiz as many times as necessary before you take the exam
