Course Description

The study of motor skill acquisition with application to teaching and coaching. Current approaches focus on the cognitive process and neural mechanisms which contribute to the learning and control of motor skills. (Fall, Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): None

1. Recall and explain concepts and terminology related to motor learning and control. (Blooms

Course Requirements

TESTS (70%)
Due to the nature of the course and how it is developed, a comprehensive nature will be present for
all examinations. Tests will be multiple choice questions taken directly from content in the review
guides designed for demonstration of recall and understanding of concepts. Practice questions will be
provided during class.
How will these be assessed?
Tests are scored out of 3 points with corresponding percentages for each score listed below this
paragraph. One of the first two semester tests may be retaken within one week of reviewing the
completed test in addition to creating a plan for improvement. You may submit test question
justifications individually for questions you can justify based on content from the course.
Test scores: 70%+ = 3/3; 60-69% = 2/3; <60% = 1/3
APPLICATION ACTIVITIES (15%)
You can demonstrate your ability to apply concepts learned during the course to a motor skill of your
interest by completing application activities for each chapter.
How will these be assessed?
1) Complete each chapter "Application Activity" assignment. Respond to feedback and
resubmit application activities within a week of feedback (if needed). (1 point per successful
assignment.)

SKILL PRESENTATIONS (15%)
You can lead a class teaching experience for a motor skill you are familiar with as well as
meaningfully participate in those led by other students. You will be able to receive and give feedback
on how to apply principles of the course more effectively.
How will these be assessed?
You will receive credit for the assignments based on the following criteria:
1) Come to class on days when we have class presentations and meaningfully engage with the
class. Submit feedback on what went well and what could be improved based on your experience
and content from the class.
(1 point/day for meaningful participation and 1 point/day for feedback on skill presentations for other
groups)
2) Create a teaching outline for your skill presentation along with teaching resources (videos/
handouts/etc.) and submit it a week in advance to receive feedback. If you miss more than 2
presentation days for other groups, or if you do not fulfill assignments with your group, you 
will be unassigned from your presentation group.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Tests and assignments are required to be completed as scheduled to receive credit. Please let me
know beforehand if you will miss an application activity/teaching experience and we can work out an
alternative solution.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is only required for student-led teaching experiences, but highly encouraged for other components of the class.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Faculty members possess the right to full freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects. They may present any controversial material relevant to their courses and their intended learning outcomes, but they shall take care not to introduce into their teaching controversial materials which have no relation to the subject being taught or the intended learning outcomes for the course.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
