Course Description

This course examines the concepts of an ethical code, the application to the legal profession, and the specific conduct regulated for paralegals. Students will explore the common rules of ethics including the need for zealous representation, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and unauthorized practice of law. Learning Outcomes


STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
: This course helps students become better professionals by (1) empowering students to make ethical determinations in true-to-life settings, and (2) building student professionalism through portfolio compilation, tactful self-promotion through networking and online, and gathering job market information. The expected student learning outcomes therefore are:

1.      Command of Content - students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of this course's content through the written word.

2.      Ethical Reasoning and Leadership skills - Students describe and analyze positions on ethical issues, apply reasoning about right and wrong human conduct, demonstrate ethical decision-making skills, and demonstrate an evolving ethical self-identity. Students will display competence in leadership philosophy. 

3.      Critical Thinking - Students demonstrate disciplined processes of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

4.      Information Literacy - Students identify, locate, evaluate, attribute and share information effectively and ethically.

5.      Be able to identify the sources of legal ethics. 

6.      Be able to reason through ethical conflicts. 

7.      Demonstrate familiarity with legal/ethical terminology. 

8.      Be able to identify concepts associated with the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct.  

9.      Identify and apply leadership principles. 

Course Requirements

ATTENDANCE/LATE WORK/METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
: This course is offered online through Canvas. Students are expected to spend the same amount of time in their Canvas classroom, with their studies, assignments, etc. as is expected of students in an in-person classroom environment (According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework). Each week students will be assigned readings, studies, homework/discussions, project work, etc. and they are to complete such matters in a timely fashion.


All deliverables must be received online on or before the matter’s due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. On a case by case basis make up work may be permitted at a reduced valuation (typically advance notice of a conflict is required – this is an online course where you can structure completing course work around conflicts). In the event of an emergency or exceptional circumstance, an allowance may be made at the instructor’s discretion if requested by the student to the instructor as soon as possible after the emergency- timely communication is key.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.
