Course Requirements

Attendance is Mandatory:  If you miss the first day of class, please contact the teacher to set up a meeting. Attendance counts for 50% of your grade. You must be in class at least 1 hour for attendance to count.

Homework: FIVE hours of Aleks work and learning is required each week: approximately 2 hours in class and 3 hours outside of class. All of this will be completed in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. This will be for a total of 30 hours for this session (half a semester).

Placement Exams: You MUST take Proctored initial and final placement exams in order to pass the class.

There are two ways to receive a Passing grade:

1. Attend class and work the required number of hours in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. If your grade on Canvas is 80% or higher, you will pass this course. Your grade is this case is NOT connected to whether or not you move up in Placement, but only on the effort you put forth.
OR
2. At any time during the course take a 2nd Proctored Placement Exam and get the score you need to take a higher course than you previously tested into. In this case your hours and attendance will not affect your grade, you will automatically pass.

Grading: Grades are Pass / Fail / UW.

Course Outline

This course is only 7 weeks, or 1/2 of a semester. Students will take a Proctored Aleks Math Placement Exam, which will place them in a review module. Class will be held twice per week in a computer lab where students will use much of class time to work on ALEKS and ask questions to help them review math concepts in their own individualized study module.  Students will be expected to do about 3-4 hours of additional work on ALEKS outside of class.  In class students will receive instructions about how to work through ALEKS PPL to master the concepts required to place into their target math class. Throughout the semester students will receive help in class on problem solving, communicating solutions, and understanding essential concepts. They will take another Proctored Aleks Math Placement Exam at the end of the 7 weeks.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late assignments (attendance and hours on ALEKS) will generally not be accepted.  If you need to complete something late, like the Placement Exam, please contact the professor.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is 50% of the student's grade if using Grading Option 1.  Students who don't attend do not usually do well at all and Grading Option 2 is rarely an option for them.
