Course Description

Student learning outcomes include basic algebra fundamentals, linear equations and linear inequalities, functions and their graphs, systems of equations and inequalities, operations with polynomial functions and factoring, quadratic equations, quadratic functions and their graphs, operations with rational expressions, and radical equations. This course will use algebra to model and solve real-world problems.

Required material: Students are required to have access to Pearson MyLab Homework, which includes a digital copy of the textbook. Unless you prefer the hard copy, the Ebook will be included in your MyLab Homework account for no extra charges.

You access the platform from your canvas page where you will find the inclusive access material; enrolled students will receive email with billing and access information. Other requirements: Reliable Internet and Webcam and Microphone for any Zoom meetings and exams.

This class will give students opportunities to develop skills with respect to several SUU Essential Learning Outcomes, including Quantitative Literacy, Problem Solving, and Communication

  • Demonstrate proficiency in linear algebra including simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, and using these skills to solve real-world application problems.
  • Graph linear and non-linear function and using graphs along with algebra to solve real-world problems.
  • Solve 2x2 Systems of Equations and Inequalities and apply this technique to solving real-world application problems.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operations on Polynomials and Polynomial Functions, including factoring.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in simplifying Rational Expressions and solving Rational Equations.
  • Simplify expressions and solve equations containing roots and radicals.

You will have to work out the daily section from the book with specific attention to definitions and Examples.

All assignments are accessible from Canvas.

Use the “Learn” application to complete your study of the current section.

Go to “Practice” module to practice few problems

Go to homework to do the assigned problems. You will have to reach an 80% score to get the homework certified. Multiple attempts are allowed for the homework (not allowed for the tests) with immediate feedback.

Exams

All exams are online and must be taken in the testing center or with Proctorio.

SUU testing center information: Call 435-865-8071.

In special cases, you may take the exams under supervision by an authorized proctor close to your location. If you live outside the school area, it is your responsibility to make the proper arrangements with a testing center in your area and communicate the contact information to the course instructor at lease three days before the exam.

Exams are password protected, and students may NOT have access to the passcodes under any circumstance. Do NOT ask for the exams’ password. Proctorio or your proctor will enter the password for you. It is the student’s responsibility to solve any technical problems they may encounter. Use MyLab and/or Canvas help desk for any technical help. The instructor cannot solve technical/computer or software installation problems for students.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

All assignments must be done on time as specified by the assignment’s deadline calendar.
Make-up exams: will be given only with a valid documented excuse and only in extreme circumstances. It should be discussed with the instructor prior to the exam.
Extra work: there is no “extra work” that can be done to improve tests scores. Please do not ask for extra work. Unless there is a technical/typo error, the exams scores are final and may not be changed.
Please note that the instructor cannot raise a grade because of need, so it is up to you to get the grade you want. You may request that I look over your scores again if you think there may be a discrepancy; if not, the grade will stand and cannot be changed by asking for a higher one. After grades are given, there is nothing we can “do” to get a higher grade, though I will be happy to check things over to see if any mistake was made in computing it.

  • If you email me through my SUU email, you must specify your class and section number for quick timely reply
  • You should not expect quick feedback to email/questions sent Friday after 4 pm.
  • Class announcements: Important class-wide messages will be posted through the Announcements tool in Canvas. Check your notification preferences to ensure receiving these messages/announcements.

Attendance Policy

This is an online class. Students are expected and required to complete their assignments as scheduled in MyLab within the assigned time.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
