Course Description

An introduction to the basic concepts and methods of statistical data analysis. Students will summarize and interpret data, evaluate important assumptions, and draw appropriate conclusions based on sample data sets from a variety of disciplines. Topics include descriptive statistics, statistical graphs, probability, discrete and continuous probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests with one and two samples, correlation and regression, chi-square tests and one-way ANOVA. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): MATH 1010 or adequate test score within the last two (2) years - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C Prerequisite Test: ACT Math Subscore or Accuplacer Elementary Algebra or ALEKS PPL - Prerequisite Test Score: 23 or 100 or 50 Registration Restriction(s): None General Education Category: Quantitative Literacy

Required Texts

You need to buy access to the Pearson software used in the course. Please do this through Canvas. My understanding is that the cost of the software will be charged to your SUU account.
Other Required Materials: Internet, Excel. You are not required to have a calculator. If you are able to, please bring a laptop to class so we can work homework problems together.

Learning Outcomes

  • Perform various hypothesis tests.
  • Calculate confidence intervals.
  • Assess methods of collecting data.
  • Create and use various probability distributions.
  • Describe data using graphs and sample statistics.
  • Use regression as a tool for inferential statistics.

Grading
  • Homework (40 assignments):     200 points (5 points each)
  • Chapter Quizzes (8 quizzes):     280 points (35 points each)
  • Projects (5 projects):     235 points (points vary)
  • Midterm and Final:     250 points (125 points each, must score a minimum of 50%)
  • Attendance:     35 points (1 point/day, 5 freebie absences)

Homework
Homework is comprised of software assignments, accessed through Canvas. You have to complete the homework with 100% correct in order to take the quizzes, midterm, and final. If you miss a question on the homework, you may try again multiple times.

Projects
Project assignments are available in Canvas. Submissions should be professional and creative. Submit the projects through Canvas. If you have any questions or would like me to look over anything before project submission, please ask.

Chapter Quizzes
Quizzes are taken at the SUU Testing Center (2nd floor of the ELC). There are practice quizzes you may take as many times as you like. Study guides are available in Canvas. Homework must be 100% correct for the corresponding chapter in order to take the quizzes.

Midterm and Final
The Midterm and Final are given in the SUU Testing Center (2nd floor of the ELC). You must score a minimum of 50% on both the Midterm and Final in order to receive a grade of C- or higher in the class, regardless of the total points you have earned. Note that grades of 50% or higher on the Midterm and Final do not guarantee a C- or higher—you still need score well on the other parts of the class.
The Midterm and Final have an optional pre-test (like a practice run). They are also given in the SUU Testing Center. If you like your Pre Midterm score (similarly your Pre Final score), you may use it as your Midterm exam score (similarly your Final exam score) and not take the actual Midterm (similarly, Final). If you don't like your Pre test score, you may take the actual test. I take the better of the two scores as your Midterm exam score (similarly, your Final exam score).

Grade Calculation Notes
Posted Canvas, MySUU Portal, and Pearson software calculated grades may be different and incorrect. I will update you mid-semester and at the end of the semester with your correct grade via Canvas email.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

SUU is operated for the common good of the greater community it serves. The common good depends upon the free search for truth and its free exposition. Academic Freedom is the right of faculty to study, discuss, investigate, teach, and publish. Academic Freedom is essential to these purposes and applies to both teaching and research.

Academic Freedom in the realm of teaching is fundamental for the protection of the rights of the faculty member and of you, the student, with respect to the free pursuit of learning and discovery. Faculty members possess the right to full freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects. They may present any controversial material relevant to their courses and their intended learning outcomes, but they shall take care not to introduce into their teaching controversial materials which have no relation to the subject being taught or the intended learning outcomes for the course.

As such, students enrolled in any course at SUU may encounter topics, perspectives, and ideas that are unfamiliar or controversial, with the educational intent of providing a meaningful learning environment that fosters your growth and development. These parameters related to Academic Freedom are included in SUU Policy 6.6.

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
