Course Description

An introduction to the basic concepts and methods of statistical data analysis. Students will summarize and interpret data, evaluate important assumptions and draw appropriate conclusions based on sample data sets from a variety of disciplines. Topics include descriptive statistics, statistical graphs, probability rules, discrete and continuous probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests with one and two samples, correlation and regression, chi-square tests and one-way ANOVA.

Learning Outcomes

Learning objectives (ELO) As a core general education course, this class will give students opportunities to develop skills with respect to several SUU Essential Learning Outcomes, including Quantitative Literacy, Problem Solving.

All exams are online and must be taken in the testing center/Proctorio or, in special cases, under supervision by an authorized proctor. You will be allowed to use your graphing calculator and/or Excel during all tests.

In special cases, you may take the exams under supervision by an authorized proctor close to your location. If you live outside the school area, it is your responsibility to make the proper arrangements with a testing center in your area and communicate the contact information to the course instructor at least three days before the exam.

Exams are password protected and students may NOT have access to the passcodes under any circumstance. Do NOT ask for the exams’ password. Proctorio or your proctor will enter the password for you.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Assignments must be completed within the assigned time. All homework assignments are scheduled in MyLab. Late assignments will be allowed with no less than 20% penalty. An accumulation of late submissions will lead to poor standing in the class and eventually failing the class
Make-up exams: will be given only with a valid documented excuse and only in extreme circumstances. It should be discussed with the instructor prior to the exam.
Extra work: there is no “extra work” that can be done to improve tests scores. Please do not ask for extra work. Unless there is a technical/typo error, the exams scores are final and may not be changed.

Attendance Policy

No classroom attendance required. Students must complete their everyday online assignments within the deadlines as published in canvas and Mylab.

Prerequisites

One of the following within the last two years: C or better in MATH 1010; B- or better in MATH 0970 or MATH 0990; Math ACT of at least 21; adequate math placement score.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
