Course Description

Supply chain management, which is also referred to as logistics network management, is an area of study that deals with the flow of goods and information throughout the value chain of business. This includes the management of suppliers, manufacturing centers, raw materials, work-in-process inventory, finished products, warehouses, distribution centers, and retail outlets. The objective is for an organization to be efficient and cost-effective in all of its activities across the entire value chain. It is a system approach philosophy that focuses on optimizing the entire system. (Fall, Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): MGMT 3100 - Prerequisite Min. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 
1. Define supply chain management. 
2. Explain the impact of global operations and global network design. 
3. Identify and discuss the importance of effective supplier relationship management. 
4. Identify and discuss the diverse issues that influence supplier selection strategy. 
5. Define logistics and discuss how logistics adds value to the economy and to organizations. 
6. Identify and discuss some of the challenges encountered in managing transportation operations. 
7. Identify and Discuss the characteristics/functions of various warehousing options. 
8. Identify and discuss different strategies you can use to manage supply disruption risks. 

Course Requirements

After you complete reading each chapter, you must take the "end of topic knowledge check" quiz. There will be a total of thirteen (13) Quizzes (12 Chapters and an Introduction/Syllabus quiz). Two of your lowest quizzes will be dropped from your total grade. These quizzes make up 33% of your grade. 

There are also a few homework and case assignments for some of the chapters. Together these assignments make up 20% of your grade. 

2% of your grade will be based on your participation and professionalism (how you present or handle yourself throughout the semester, your communications, and your ability to learn independently). 

There will be three (3) exams in this course. Please note that these are proctored exams.  Each test will consist of about 45 to 50 multiple choice/True False questions, and some math problems (multiple choice). These tests make up 45% of your grade.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
