Course Description

The first course in the music theory sequence, the course comprises primary triads, figured bass, non-harmonic tones, cadences, and voice leading. Students must pass the Music Theory Entrance Exam online before enrolling in the course. Required Texts

The text for this course is written by Dr. Ipson and is available in Canvas under the Pages tab without cost. It includes outlines, assignments, and analyses. In lieu of purchasing a text, it is highly recommended that each student in this section has an iPad with an apple pencil. The entire course will be done digitally, including homework assignments and tests.

Learning Outcomes

  • Write in four-part choral and keyboard styles using good voice-leading principles for primary triads.
  • Analyze tonal music (written and aural) that uses primary triads.
  • Apply theoretical concepts to performance practice.
  • Compose an original piece in 4-part choral style demonstrating an understanding of the materials covered in the course.

Course Requirements

ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments will be given almost every class period. Assignments will be 30% of the final grade. The lowest two assignments will be dropped from the final grade.
FINAL PROJECT:
The final project will be an SATB choral piece and will be graded on neatness, voice-leading, chord progressions, cadences, and completeness. You must analyze the piece completely, including Roman numerals, figured bass, non-harmonic tones, and cadences. The piece is due on December 1. No late projects will be accepted.
QUIZZES:
Quizzes will be given after nearly each chapter. After the fundamentals section, they will include four-part writing exercises and analyses. The final exam time is December 9, 7:00--8:50. The final will be a take-home exam to turn in on Canvas. The exam must be completed and submitted by Thursday, December 11, before 11:59pm. Quizzes will be worth 100 points each. Major part-writing mistakes will deduct five points from your total, and minor mistakes will deduct two points from your total. In analyses, incorrect Roman numerals will deduct two points. Other mistakes will deduct one point. No more than seven points will be deducted from any one chord.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late assignments will receive a 5% reduction per day that it is late. Assignments later than two weeks will not be accepted. Late exams and projects will not be accepted.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required, and will be 10% of the final grade. There are five free absences before missing class affects the grade.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
