Course Description

Private lessons in vocal or instrumental music. 12 half-hour lessons. Fee required. (Fall, Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): Instructor permission Repeatable for Add’l Credit? Yes - Total Credits: 3 Registration Restriction(s): Intensive English Program majors may not enroll.

This course is designed to create well-rounded, well-informed, and musically skilled flutists by providing fundamental concepts, performance and practice techniques, and a working knowledge of the standard literature, so that the student will develop a high musical proficiency in a variety of styles. Regardless of the degree program, students are expected to learn the flute at the highest level possible.

Required Texts

Notebook, instrument(s), pencil, assigned pedagogical material, assigned repertoire, including level-appropriate etudes and pieces from the standard flute repertoire.


Learning Outcomes

  • Exhibit technical and musical expertise with the instrument, including the development of appropriate phrase shaping, style sensitivity, rhythmic integrity, flexible and pleasant tone production, solid breath control, controlled vibrato, embouchure suppleness, dynamic subtleties, fluent technique, correct fingerings (regular, alternate, and trill), healthy physical approaches, varied articulation styles, pitch accuracy, and awareness of intonation tendencies and corrective measures
  • Learn and appreciate the standard flute repertoire from all periods of music.
  • Recognize and demonstrate understanding of all interpretive instructions found in music
  • Recognize and demonstrate understanding of performance practice styles and conventions
  • Develop knowledge of resources of information about the flute and flute playing
  • Establish practice routines that promote maximum progress
  • Demonstrate comprehension and application of flute pedagogy
  • Demonstrate professionalism

Course Requirements


Have a reputable flute technician check your flute every six months.
Weekly lessons, scheduled with the instructor, culminating in a jury and/or recital performance at the end of each semester.
Weekly studio class, by school policy and schedule.
Daily practice, which will be structured by the student with the help of the instructor
Timely collaboration with pianist, conforming to the guidelines set forth by piano staff as needed.
The student may be required to pay for rehearsals, performances, and juries with pianists. 
In addition to the departmental recital attendance requirement, flute students are expected to attend ALL flute-related events on campus. This includes all solo recitals given by flute students and the professor. You must discuss any conflicts with the instructor to be excused from a flute event. Unexcused absences will lower your lesson grade by one grade level.

Students are required to keep a practice notebook, which will be checked by the instructor at periodic intervals. The practice notebook will contain at least the following information: Material covered during the lesson; student's weekly goals; and a log of daily practice sessions, including material practiced, difficulties encountered, and questions for the next lesson.                                             
Students are encouraged to make a sound recording of each lesson via smartphone, tablet, laptop computer, or other portable device, and then listen to the lesson as soon as possible afterwards, making appropriate notes in the practice notebook.
Listening assignments will sometimes be given. Students are responsible for listening to the assigned pieces and writing details in the practice notebook, such as flutist, accompanist, or performing ensemble information, year of publication (if possible), and the student's impressions of that recording.
All students are required to regularly check their SUU e-mail.

 

Course Outline

 The goal of private lessons and studio class is to help you become ready for a career in music. The approach for this will be different for each student, depending on your career goals.
Assigned repertoire and technical studies will be taught and coached in private settings, repertoire classes, or as part of a group lesson. Performance experiences will be achieved in studio class, joint rep class, or student recitals. Master classes with guest instructors will serve as additional pedagogical enhancements. Guest performers or recordings of repertoire may serve as a model for performance. Other teaching methods and assignments may include self-reflection and assessment, and guided listening. Some lessons may be scheduled online as needed.
Grading
Students earn a grade each week for lessons. It is expected that the student prepare the assigned materials for that week. Grades are based on each student’s interest, participation, improvement, and evidence of efficient and effective work. In addition to the weekly grade, students will also perform a technique exam each quarter, perform in repertoire class, and perform an end of quarter jury for selected faculty members.
 Participation grades result from attendance at required events, being active and engaged in studio class, and completed writing assignments.

 Description of lesson grades below:
 A: Student shows superior competency in completing course and studio requirements and superior comprehension of presented materials. Student is prepared for the lesson.
 B: Student demonstrates an above-average competency in completing course and studio requirements and above-average comprehension of presented materials.
 Student is satisfactorily prepared for the lesson.
 C: Student demonstrates an ability to adequately meet the requirements of the course and studio and an adequate comprehension of presented materials. Student is
 prepared at the absolute bare minimum at each lesson.
 D: Student puts forth effort toward the course and studio requirements, but requirements are not met. Student is not prepared for the lesson.
 F: Student fails to meet acceptable standards of the course and studio. Student is not prepared for the lesson, and performance is poor.
 


Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

If you must miss your scheduled lesson, contact me ahead of time via e-mail as soon as possible to explain your absence and arrange a make-up lesson. If you then miss your make-up lesson, there will be no other make-up lesson arranged. If the absence is unexcused, you will receive a grade of "0" for that lesson. 

Attendance Policy

Attendance at weekly lessons, repertoire class, and all studio-related events is mandatory.
Please do not show up to your lesson if you are sick, especially with flu symptoms.
If you must miss your scheduled lesson, contact me ahead of time via e-mail as soon as possible to explain your absence and arrange a make-up lesson. If you then miss your make-up lesson, there will be no other make-up lesson arranged. If the absence is unexcused, you will receive a grade of "0" for that lesson. 

Course Fees

Course fees as indicated and required by SUU when enrolling for classes, courses, applied lessons, or recitals.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
