Catalog Description

Applied Music Instruction on Violin: This class has twelve 50-minute lessons and a required studio class per week with expected outside work of 6 hours per week. This course is designed for students majoring in music. (Fee required.)

  • This course is structured to be flexible and tailored to each student's needs and progress. Materials may vary from student to student.
  • Emphasis on fundamentals and repertoire: Instruction covers:
    • Scales and arpeggios
    • Technical studies and etudes focusing on specific areas like double stops, positions and shifting, bowing styles (detaché, martelé, staccato, spiccato, ricochét, sautillé), agility and strength of the left hand, and development of sound (vibrato and dynamic control)
    • Standard repertoire from all periods of music, focusing on musicianship, beauty of tone, accuracy in rhythm, intonation, and technique

Learning Outcomes

Course Outcomes

This course provides private lessons tailored to the student's skill level and major. Students are required to perform a piece, either at a recital or studio class. All music majors are required to perform an applied music jury at the conclusion of each semester of study. Music minors must perform at least one applied music jury during their two semesters of study. The Bachelor of Music degree in performance or commercial music requires a half recital in the junior year and full recital in the senior year. The Bachelor of Music Education degree requires a half recital in the senior year. The Bachelor of Arts degree requires a half recital in the junior year.   • Performance opportunities: Students are provided with various opportunities to perform throughout their studies, including weekly studio classes, recitals, and juries.

Course Requirements

Grade Criteria and Scheme

Grading is based on the effort given by the student to acquire the skill of the assigned music. As the student attends class prepared, they will earn 10 points per day. A minimum grade of B- or higher is required in individual instruction courses for music majors.

Learner Responsibilities

Absences/Tardiness: Students are permitted to waive one absence or lack of preparation; any subsequent absences or lack of preparation will result in a deduction from the final grade. Absences due to illness or emergencies may be excused at the discretion of the instructor. Each tardy results in a two-point deduction from the daily grade.

Attendance/Participation: Attendance and active participation are required. Students receive 10 points per day. To earn the points, students should be on time and prepared for class. A minimum of six hours of independent practice per week is expected. Notify the instructor if you need to take emergency calls; otherwise, keep cell phones off and put away during lessons.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.
