Course Description

This course is designed to allow you to take a hands-on approach, to improve your health by attending the fitness center regularly throughout the semester. We encourage periodic, consistent visits per week rather than daily visits at the end of the semester.

The main objective of this course is to help students develop healthy habits by attending the fitness center on most days of the week. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. This exercise recommendation can be met through 30-60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (five days per week) or 20-60 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise (three days per week).

Required Texts

No text is required for this course.

Learning Outcomes

  • Feel confident and comfortable attending the fitness center
  • Gain familiarity with gym equipment
  • Improve or maintain healthy body composition
  • Promote lifelong exercise habits through regular gym attendance

Course Requirements

Exercise a minimum of 34 times for 30 minutes each session using the SUU Fitness Center
SIGN YOUR WAIVER ELECTRONICALLY located under "Assignments" "waiver."
Gym fees will be included in your tuition fees
You may attend the gym as many times, for as long as you’d like for the semester
Students may not receive credit for attending other gyms (e.g. vasa, retro…) unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor at the beginning of the semester.

Grades:
The following list is a breakdown of the grading schedule for varying attendance levels.
  • A = 34 or more sessions
  • A- = 30-33
  • B+ = 27-29
  • B = 24-26
  • B- = 20-23
  • C+ = 17-19
  • C = 14-16
  • C- = 11-13
  • D = 8-10
  • F = Less than 7
There are 15 available weeks to earn credit days. In those 15 weeks there are several breaks when the gym will be closed (depending on the semester: Labor Day, Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Spring Break, etc). Start getting in Day 1 to workout, shoot for 3, 4, 5, even 6 days the first week and try to continue that throughout the semester. Once you’ve earned your A hopefully you’ve developed a habit and will continue to attend and make your health a priority. It’s also a great way to de-stress towards the end of the semester.

Course Outline

This is a self-paced course.  You may attend the fitness center any time during gym hours to earn credit. All attendance days must be completed BEFORE finals week.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late attendance days/make up days will not be accepted.  You will have approximately 90 possible attendance days, do not procrastinate.

Attendance Policy

  • You must check in and out with your Student ID card or mobile phone
  • If you do not have your card or phone the front desk can manually enter you IN and OUT with your T-number
  • Sessions must be 30 consecutive minutes (e.g. 29min and 59 seconds will not count, aim for at least 31 minutes or more to be safe). If you are working out for longer than 2 hours scan out, then continue your workout or we will assume you scanned in and went to class, and it will not count.
  • You must work out during your gym attendance, do not sit on machines or bike and play on your phone. Please do not check in and go to class.
  • YOU will scan yourself in upon arrival and scan yourself out upon completion (it is your responsibility to make sure you are scanned in and out correctly) ASK THE FRONT DESK IMMEDIATELY TO SEE IF IT SCANNED YOU IN AND OUT
  • Only ONE visit per day will count toward the attendance requirement
  • Students may use any of the facilities in the building and outside; i.e. going for a run outside or on the indoor track, yoga outside, pickle ball, swimming, basketball, etc. However, YOU MUST CHECK IN AT THE GYM BEFORE YOU BEGIN AND OUT WHEN YOU CONCLUDE. If you choose to do this you must download an app that can track your distance, heart rate, time, etc to prove you were moving during this time. You will show this to the front desk of the gym when you check out. You will not earn credit if you cannot show 30 minutes of movement.
  • If you are a collegiate athlete or are taking an activity class for credit (yoga, swimming, self-defense, football, tennis, etc) your team practices or class do NOT count towards this class. You may not earn days for those practices.
  • Attendance will be updated on Canvas daily.
  • Any errors in the system will be corrected under “Missed Portal Attendance Corrections.” Your correct Attendance Total will be “Fitness Center Attendance” and “Missed Portal Attendance Corrections” added together.
