Course Description

Golf is taught off-campus at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course (200 E 900 N) and is an activity class that will focus on skill development and understanding of strategies and rules of the game. There is an additional fee to be paid to the host site. For the current fee, please reach out to the Department of Kinesiology and Outdoor Recreation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proper grip, stance, and swing mechanics
  • Understand and apply the rules of golf
  • Exhibit appropriate golf etiquette
  • Perform basic shots including driving, iron play, chipping, and putting
  • Navigate a golf course and keep score

Course Requirements

Assessment/Evaluation/Grading

Attendance will be taken each day and your grade is determined by the percentage of classes you attended. For example, if you attended 84% of the classes, you will receive a B; if you attended ≥90% of the classes, you will receive an A.

Grading Process: Final grades will be determined based on the percentage of the total number of classes you attended.

Grading Scale:

  • A: ≥ 90%
  • B: ≥ 80% and ≤ 89%
  • C: ≥ 70% and ≤ 79%
  • D: ≥ 60% and ≤ 69%
  • F: ≤ 59%

Week 5: Golf Etiquette and On-Course Strategy

  • Proper behavior on the course
  • Pace of play
  • Shot selection and course navigation

Week 6: Advanced Techniques and Trouble Shots

  • Bunker play
  • Uneven lies
  • Shaping shots

Week 7: On-Course Play and Final Assessment

  • 9-hole round with instruction
  • Skills evaluation

Late Work/Make-up Work: Due to the nature of this course, in general there are no late assignments or makeup work.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required at all class meetings. If you must miss a class and would like it excused, you must discuss with the instructor ahead of time when possible. In the event of an emergency (medical, family, etc.), please alert the instructor as soon as possible.

Course Fees

There is an additional fee ($60) to be paid to the host site.

Safety and Risk Assumption

This course includes or could include a laboratory, physical activity, personal travel, or field trips. Participation in the course may expose students to certain foreseeable and unforeseeable risks of injury such as, but not limited to, illness, injury, or even death. Knowing these risks, students freely and voluntarily participate in the course and agree to assume and accept any and all associated risks.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
