Course Description

This course is based on the learning and training of aviation technical language. It is designed to bridge the gap between the English language and aviation technical terms. This course will better prepare students for further advanced courses in aviation pilot training. (As Needed) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): None Note: This course carries no credit applicable to a postsecondary certificate or degree.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be introduced to the aeronautical knowledge of pilots in the Federal Aviation Administration. They will learn about the many terms and the language used by pilots flying many different aircraft. Students will demonstrate a firm understanding of the aviation pilot training terms commonly used in the industry. Students will gain a broad understanding of the many terms used as a pilot while flying or on the ground. Students will demonstrate a healthy
understanding of key aviation language that is required by the Federal Aviation Administration and expand their familiarization with Air Traffic Control needs. Students will be prepared further for advanced coursework in aviation pilot training. Students will demonstrate this familiarization by practicing speaking the many common terms used by pilots in the industry. The satisfactory accomplishment of these outcomes will be verified through learning activities, practice, and oral quizzes done in the SUU learning system.

Course Requirements

Online Discussions
Students will receive points for participating in the weekly online class discussions

Quizzes
The quizzes are worth 20% of the course grade. Each quiz will be a short answer quiz.

Midterm/Final Exam
The midterm and final exam are worth 30% of the course grade. Late final exams will not be accepted.

Final Grades

Final grades assigned for this course will be based on the percentage of total points earned and are assigned as follows:

ChatGPT

The use of chat GPT or any type of AI will not be allowed in this class. 
If you are caught using AI you will receive a zero on the assignment. Continued use of AI can lead a failing grade in the class. AI detection software's will be used.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late Assignments
Late assignments are strongly discouraged and acceptance of late work will be at the discretion of the instructor. Late work may be docked every day it's late

Makeup Work
Makeup work will be considered late work and will be subject to the stipulations of the Late Assignments section unless it is previously worked out with the instructor.

Attendance Policy

This is an all online, asynchronous course so there are not any required meeting times.  However, students are expected to keep up with the weekly due dates for all assignments and quizzes.

Course Fees

Aviation (AVTN prefix) Program Fee  = $1.25 per credit hour

Technology Fee (Online Classes)  =  $8.00 per credit hour

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
