PRDV 5000-19

Course: PRDV 5000-19
Credits: 6
Term: Fall Semester 2025
Department: LIB
CRN: 33887

Course Description

In this course, the student will be introduced to the process of creating and applying intermediate robust parametric solid models, assemblies, and drawings using CAD software. The information will be presented using training videos, tutorials, and group projects. This class not only covers software use but also incorporates and encourages innovative and creative engineering solutions to design problems.
A secondary objective of this class is to prepare the student to pass the Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) exam. Upon completion of this course, the student will have the option to take the Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) certification test if they would like.

Required Texts

The course material required for this course is listed below:
  • Required software for this course will be provided.
  • The Free Student Version of Solidworks can be downloaded from the Solidworks website. Note, this is not a requirement but is highly recommended due to the number of drawings that will be needed. Students are encouraged to complete CAD work as homework in order to facilitate adequate time in the fabrication lab.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a clear understanding of parametric modeling and the role parametric modeling plays in the industry.
  • Properly create and constrain efficient, complex multi sketched features, and create a 3D solid from the sketches.
  • Accurately and efficiently, create, and constrain assemblies that properly represent the real-life assembly.
  • Accurately and efficiently, create production drawings from the solids/assemblies, and be able to identify the different types of drawing views.
  • Apply basic to intermediate analysis, animation, and simulation tools to parts and assemblies.

Course Requirements

The final grade is determined from the four categories shown below. The student will have instant access to his/her homework, quizzes, and test grades throughout the semester on the Canvas grade book. When creating and submitting homework assignments, quizzes and tests, make sure the student's name, as well as the assignment name, is used in the file name. This course is pass/fail, with 80% required to pass.

  • Homework - 25%
  • Quizzes - 25%
  • Tests - 25%
  • Final Project - 25%

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

All work must be completed and submitted by the last scheduled day of class (Dec. 5, 2024). There is no makeup for a missed quiz. There will be one makeup test scheduled towards the end of the semester, and at the end of the semester, the lowest test grade will be dropped.

AI Encouraged With Disclosure

Within this course, you are allowed and encouraged to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) applications to create, draft, or complete assignments as appropriate. When you use generative AI, it is important for you to check your work and be sure you understand it and can defend it with your instructor. Also, you must always disclose when you do use AI as part of your work. This helps the instructor and classmates understand the effective uses of AI, and demonstrates a sense of responsibility for your work.

The use of generative AI tools (e.g.ChatGPT, Dall-e, etc.) is permitted in this course for the following activities:

  • Brainstorming and refining your ideas;
  • Finding information on your topic (it is your responsibility to cross check and verify that information);
  • Checking grammar and style.

The use of generative AI tools is NOT permitted in this course for the following activities:

  • Impersonating you in classroom contexts, such as by using the tool to compose discussion board prompts assigned to you or content that you put into a Zoom chat;
  • Completing individual or group work that your group has assigned to you;
  • Writing entire sentences, paragraphs or papers to complete class assignments;
  • AI can not be used to answer any Quiz or Test Questions.

You are responsible for the information you submit based on an AI query (for instance, that it does not violate intellectual property laws, or contain misinformation or unethical content). If using AI tools, it must be properly documented and cited in order to stay within university policies on academic honesty. Any assignment that is found to have used generative AI tools in unauthorized ways will receive a zero in the assignment. When in doubt about permitted usage, please ask for clarification.

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

This course is designed to be taken in conjunction with the PRDV 5000 Fundamentals of Manufacturing course. While there are no course prerequisites, the course will be most informative for students enrolled in both courses simultaneously.

STATEMENT OF SAFETY OR RISK ASSUMPTION:

There are no inherent risks associated with this course, as it consists of work primarily done on the computer. If eye fatigue is a problem for students, a break or lighting change is recommended.

ADA Statement

Students with medical, psychological, learning, or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodations, or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Disability Resource Center, located in Room 206F of the Sharwan Smith Center or by phone at (435) 865-8042. Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

SUU is operated for the common good of the greater community it serves. The common good depends upon the free search for truth and its free exposition. Academic Freedom is the right of faculty to study, discuss, investigate, teach, and publish. Academic Freedom is essential to these purposes and applies to both teaching and research.
