Course Description

Stress and pain often interact and exacerbate each other. Although considered undesirable by most people, they are to some extent necessary, and can at times be beneficial. This course explores the psychobiological variables which contribute to stress and the perception of pain. Both psychological and biological based therapies are discussed. Opportunities for personal applications will be included. (Fall [As Needed], Spring [As Needed], Summer [As Needed]) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): PSY 1010 - Prerequisite Min. Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to;

a.      Articulate and explain what stress is, the different kinds of stressors, and why stress is necessary at times
b.      Articulate and explain the biopsychosocial variables that determine whether an event or condition becomes a stressor
c.      Practice and use a comprehensive list of stress management techniques
d.      Build a stress portfolio of themselves, their coping techniques, and ways to change OR identify recurring stressors, create a plan to copy with them, execute the
         plan, and create a new plan for future stressors
e.      Articulate and explain what pain is, the different kinds of pain, and why pain is necessary at times
f.       Articulate and explain the biopsychosocial variables that influence pain perception and pain behaviors
g.      Practice and use pain management techniques reduce unnecessary pain
h.      Identify and summarize relevant peer-reviewed research

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Due dates have been established to help you stay on track and discourage procrastination. But "life happens". Maybe you are sick, have a dentist appointment, or need a mental health day. The reason does not matter. I have a three-day grace period on everything EXCEPT the final exam.  You will "pay" me 5% for each day you are late, regardless of the reason. After the grace period ends, so does your opportunity to submit. Want to erase late fees? Earn bonus points and you can redeem them at the end of the semester for rewards - one of which is a late fee eraser!

If you cannot submit something by the end of the grace period because of an unforeseen, unavoidable, and justifiable reason, you may contact me (via email) to request an extension. You will need to tell me which graded activity was or will be missed and why. Documentation may be required. IMPORTANT: requests for an extension must be made a soon as possible. Waiting too late might result in a request denial. Also, you will still incur late fees - but these will be capped at 15%. Remember, you can always erase them later using bonus points. 

Attendance Policy

Studio class attendance is required. You cannot contribute if you are not there! Moreover, most activities will be completed in class. If you are absent, you will not be able to do them. To sweeten the pot even more, you will earn 5 bonus points for attending. Note however, if you are tardy, you lose 1 point. If you leave early, you lose 1 point.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
