Course Description

Students learn about business transaction cycles, how to design an AIS, e-business, internal control objectives and procedures, industry IC and IT governance frameworks, and database fundamentals. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): Acceptance into the School of Business OR permission from a School of Business advisor OR have an approved Accounting minor

Required Texts

You are required to purchase the Revel version of Romney, Steinbart, Summers, and Wood, Accounting Information Systems, 15e, for this course. We will use Revel for assigned reading, comprehension checks, and chapter quizzes. This course participates in Inclusive Access, which simplifies the purchase process and gives you automatic access on day one of the Class. The bookstore will automatically bill your student account and you will access the Text through the “Access Pearson” link on the class Canvas page (no access code required). 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  1. Apply Accounting information systems terminology.
  2. Read and create business process/ system documentation.
  3. Operate database structure and database management systems.
  4. Identify common risks and controls for business processes and accounting information systems.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency using accounting software tools.

Acceptance into the School of Business OR permission from a School of Business advisor OR have an approved Accounting minor.

Course Outline

EXAMS 
There will be three exams, administered every four to five chapters of regular course content. Each exam is NOT comprehensive and MUST be taken in-class (unless otherwise designated). Exams will be multiple choice and are not open book or open note. Each exam will be worth 400 points, for a combined total of 30% of your final grade.   
 
QUICKBOOKS PROJECT            
Demonstrating the ability to apply accounting information systems concepts in a true-to-life scenario is an important part of this course. Intuit’s QuickBooks software package is an AIS package that is frequently used by small and medium-sized businesses. Throughout the semester, you will be required to implement an accounting information system using QuickBooks.  
This comprehensive case includes multiple milestone assignments, each building off previous assignments. It is important for you to complete each assignment in a timely manner as doing so will affect your ability to complete the next assignment. Please see Canvas for assignment due dates. The case will primarily be completed in class with the final portion being completed outside of class. The QuickBooks case will comprise 525 points and be worth 13.125% of your final grade.  
 
REVEL ASSIGNMENTS            
Each chapter will involve reading assignments in Revel, which are due at the BEGINNING of class, the day we begin covering a given topic. Revel assignments typically include reading as well as comprehension check question and activities and a chapter quiz. You will have on assignment for each chapter covered from the book. Each assignment will be worth 50 points. As such, Revel Assignments will be worth 750 points, for a total of 18.75% of your final grade. 
 
EXTENSION ASSIGNMENTS            
Extension assignments will primarily deal with application of course principles, whereas Revel deals with knowledge of terms and principles covered within the textbook. Extension assignments will be due at the beginning of class, the class period AFTER we finish covering a topic. Each extension assignment will be worth 50 points, for a total of 750 points (18.75% of the grade). 
 
PARTICIPATION/ATTENDANCE 
The course will follow a flipped course format, where you are expected to complete preparation assignments BEFORE class. Class time will be spent focusing on specific topics, which will tend to involve discussion and certain extension activities. We will also frequently complete extension assignment homework during class. Each day of class involves 10 potential participation/attendance points, for a total of 240 points. An additional 10 points will be automatically awarded at the end of the semester to smooth the grade. As such, total final points will be out of 250, comprising 6.25% of your final grade. 
 
DATA ANALYTICS CASE 
Near the end of the semester, we will complete training and a case study for Celonis, a process mining software that is free to access for students. The case will involve self-study and completion of a Celonis foundation course, with an in-class case study. The Celonis bundle of assignments comprises 525 points and will be worth 13.125% of your final grade. 
 
EXTRA CREDIT  
There may be opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester. 

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

No late work will be accepted unless arranged with me in advance. You are responsible for letting me know that you will miss an assignment or other due date. You are also responsible for completing work before the due date. Only missed work due to university-sponsored absences will be allowed to be made up.

Attendance Policy

As a face-to-face course, attendance is expected and graded for each class period. Potential points for attendance/participation range from 5-10 points for each class. That said, I understand circumstances may exist where you are unable to attend class on a given day due to sickness, family emergencies, or a host of other reasons. If I am notified in advance, I will award the full 10 points for up to three missed class periods. 

Course Fees

This course involves a $67.50 course fee ($22.50 per credit hour | 3 credit hours).

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
