Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Methods and techniques for understanding the development of creative expression and perceptual awareness. Professional education course for elementary and art education majors. (Fall, Spring)

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will explore fundamentals, theories, and practices in art education; examine contemporary curricula, teaching resources for art; construct and evaluate art lesson plans that adhere to national and/or state standards; and perform best practices.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

LATE WORK POLICY: Due to the brevity of this course, it is advised that you pace yourself and turn in your assignments on time. However, there will be no penalty for late work. If there is are extenuating circumstance preventing you from completing your work on time, please consult with the Course Facilitator. 

Attendance Policy

This is an online asynchronous course, so your attendance is predicated upon your submission of assignments. No submission of work constitutes no attendance. 

Course Fees


For this class a textbook is not required but the purchase of art materials is. The cost for your materials for the session will be roughly $50-$100 depending on what type of materials you choose to purchase or what alternate materials you can source. Please consider sharing, or borrowing supplies from a friend or family member if possible, or sourcing materials some other way. Please contact the instructor for other options if there is severe financial difficulty in obtaining supplies. You will need to check each Art making project (4) because you will have options on what materials you will need based on which project you choose to create. Some materials you may need to order ahead of time, depending on availability where you live.

Materials can be purchased from Amazon, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Blick, and Walmart or other online vendors.

GRADING POLICY: Grades will follow Southern Utah University’s grading standards:

A | 90-100% | 500-550 pts | Excellent:  all course work was performed at a clearly outstanding level.
B | 80-89.9% | 450-499 pts | Good:  all course work was met at a level measurably above average.
C | 70-79.9% | 400-449 pts | Satisfactory:  all course was met at a satisfactory level of competence.
D | 60-69.9% | 350-399 pts | Poor:  all course requirements are met, but the level is below average.
F | 0-59.9% | 0-349 pts | Failure:  did not meet all of the course requirements or did so inadequately.
I |   | Incomplete | May be given due to unusual circumstances with the permission of the course instructor. The instructor must submit an incomplete grade form outlining what the student must complete and when to receive a final grade.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Faculty members possess the right to full freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects. They may present any controversial material relevant to their courses and their intended learning outcomes, but they shall take care not to introduce into their teaching controversial materials which have no relation to the subject being taught or the intended learning outcomes for the course.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
