Course Description

Lab to accompany BIOL 3550. One three-hour meeting per week. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0 or above) must be earned in this course before it can be counted in a biological science major or minor or as a prerequisite for any other biology course. Required Texts

Required text: 
There is no required text for Plant Taxonomy lab, although you will need an unlined 9"x12" notebook.
A 10x jeweler's loupe is also strongly recommended, especially for the second half of the semester when we will be doing weekly lab field trips.

Learning Outcomes

We will use the time in Plant Taxonomy lab to practice and solidify concepts we learn in lecture. Skills you will learn include:
  • Reading and interpreting phylogenies,
  • Knowledge of important plant structures,
  • Identification of prominent and interesting species from the local southern Utah flora.

Course Requirements

Course Assessment:
Your grade in lab is assessed through turning a lab notebook of notes and drawings for each week of lab. The first half of the semester (while it is still cold outside) consists of classroom labs in which you will observe and draw plants from the greenhouse, from near campus, or through microscopy using pre-prepared slides. The second half of the semester will consist primarily of field trips to various locations in southern Utah. Some of these labs will involve significant walking (up to 2 miles on some days), but most will be less. If you have any physical limitations that would interfere with your ability to hike comfortably, let me know ahead of time and we can make alternative arrangements. Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late work:
Assignments handed in late will be docked 10% of the total possible value of the assignment per day, starting at the time the assignment is due to be handed in. Due dates and times for all assignments can be found on the syllabus calendar and will be posted on Canvas.

Attendance Policy

Lab attendance is required. Because there is only one section of Plant Taxonomy lab, it won't be possible to attend a different section to make up any absences. If you will need to miss lab for a valid reason (University-sponsored events or important personal reasons), please let me know with as much lead time as possible and we can make alternate arrangements for a make up assignment.

ADA Statement

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
