Undergraduate Research is defined as the development of an independent research
project including observation and activities on or off campus that tie back to biological
concepts that make up core of biology courses. These experiences are intended to
enhance the classroom experience and promote a
greater understanding of key biological concepts and the scientific method.
Expectations of Undergraduate Research
1. Students will gain extracurricular experience related to the biological sciences under
the direction of a faculty
member in a professional setting such as assisting in a classroom (as a TA), laboratory
or in the field.
2. Undergraduate research requires a total of 45 hours per credit hour by the last day of
class instruction
(Approximately three (3) hours of experience per week per credit hour.)
3. The student must obtain the faculty adviser and department chair approval for the
proposed experience.
4. The student must consult with the adviser/provider to determine the appropriate
course number and credit hours for
the proposed experience.
5.The student must enroll for the appropriate course at the registrar’s office.
6.The student must obtain required signatures on all forms and return the completed
forms including the add card to
the Biology Department where the appropriate number of copies will be distributed and
the original kept on file.
7.Evaluation of student effort will be documented based on the contract/proposal agreed
to by both the facultymember and the student.
