Course Description

Principles and practices of analytical lab work including quality assurance; gravimetric, volumetric, and instrumental techniques; raw data conversion; and proper reporting techniques. Six (6) hours lab per week. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0 or above) must be earned in this course before it can be counted in a physical science major or minor or as a prerequisite for any other course. Learning Outcomes

1) To become acquainted with classical analytical methods and compare these methods to instrumental methods.  2) To better understand the principles behind instrumental and classical methods.

Course Requirements

1)      Be able to run the following instrumentation: 

a.       UV visible spectrophotometer, 

b.      Bruker 400 MHz NMR, 

c.       Metrohm ion chromatograph, 

d.      Gas chromatograph instrumentation. 

e.       Perkin Elmer Spectrum 100 FTIR, 

f.        Waters HPLC or Agilent HPLC

g.      PTI Spectrofluorometer

h.      Agilent GCMS

i.        Agilent GC

j.        Avion MS

2)      Be able to accurately perform a titration analysis.

3)      Be able to practically apply Beer’s Law.

4)      Be able to apply Analytical Chemistry to solve a real life problem.

5)      To be able to communicate the results of your analysis effectively.

Course Outline

23 Experiments will be completed during the semester in addition a Group project will be assigned   The exact course outline will be provided by the instructor in canvas

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

You are expected to hand in the required report seven days after the experiment is finished.  For every week that a report is late, seven points will be subtracted from a full report and five points for a simple report.  As many students are interviewing for jobs and attending graduate school visits this semester, each student may miss one lab and be awarded their average grade on a lab reports, provided their absence is to further his/her career.  If you miss a second laboratory experiment for a similar reason, there are a limited amount of makeup activities that may be substituted for the lab report.  Once these activities are spoken for, you will not be able to make up your absence.  These activities are assigned on a first-come basis.  In order to make up your first absence, you must turn in a one page summary of your activity that made you miss the lab experiment.  The lab experiment that you missed must be on the summary.  The same thing must be done for the second experiment, but a summary of your supplemental activity must be written as well. When warranted (School Excused), experiments may be performed at another time with approval of the instructor:  

Attendance Policy

 Attendance is required, if you miss a lab or expect to miss a lab because of a proper excuse, you may make-up the lab with special assignments given by the instructor.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.
