COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Introduces students to the purpose, function and history of
Criminal Justice systems around the world.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This course will provide the student with an understanding of
purpose, function and operations of the police, the court system, and the corrections
systems worldwide. Furthermore, the student will learn how these systems interrelate and
their affect on crime and society.

STATEMENT OF INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
This course is taught using the Socratic
method where questions are asked and discussion is essential. The student will be
responsible for keeping current with all reading assignments. The instructor believes
strongly that written and verbal communication skills are critical for a successful career in
any field, and that this class will prepare students to think on their feet, understand issues
from all sides and present concise and logical arguments in support of their views. Only
through lively debate can various perspectives be explored and opinions based on solid
foundations be formed
GRADES:
25% - Group Presentations ( 100 points)
25% - Class Participation (Quizzes 10@10pts each 100 points)
10% - Test 1 (40 points)
10% - Midterm (40 points)
10% - Test 3 (40 points)
20% - Final (80 points)
400 points possible
Final Grades will be awarded as follows: A: 93– 100; A-: 90-93; B+: 87-89; B: 83-86; B-: 80-
82; C+: 77-79; C: 73-76; C-: 70-72; D+: 67-69; D: 63-66, D-: 60-62; F: less than 60.
ATTENDANCE:
Only by attendance will the student be in a position to discuss the nuances of the
various theories and gain a sense of their priority.
READING ASSIGNMENTS:
As indicated above, the student shall be responsible to have read
the materials prior to each class. The schedule is listed below:
Late Work:
Late work will only be accepted one class period after the due date and it will be
penalized 50%.
Tests: The First Test will cover chapters 1-2. The Second Test will cover chapters 3-4.
The Third Test will cover chapters 5-6. The fourth test will cover all chapters .The Final
will be comprehensive.
