This course is designed to reflect the expectations, pace, and professionalism of the sport industry. Students are expected to engage actively, think critically, and complete all coursework to a high standard.
1. Attendance & Professional Engagement
Regular attendance is expected in this upper-division course. Much of the learning occurs through discussion, case analysis, and guest speakers drawn from the professional sport industry. Students are responsible for all material covered in class, including lectures, discussions, case studies, and guest presentations.
Planned absences should be communicated to the instructor in advance whenever possible.
2. Assigned Readings & Chapter Captures
Students will complete assigned readings throughout the semester. Chapter Captures are structured reading reflections designed to reinforce key concepts and prepare students for discussion and assessments.
Expectations include:
- Completion of Chapter Captures by the start of class on assigned days
- Thoughtful engagement with course readings
- Use of Chapter Captures as study tools for exams
3. Case Studies & Applied Analysis
Students will analyze real-world case studies drawn from professional sport organizations and leagues. These assignments emphasize applied decision-making, ethical reasoning, and strategic thinking in sport management contexts.
Students are expected to:
- Prepare for case discussions
- Contribute meaningfully to in-class analysis
- Submit written responses when assigned
4. Exams & Assessments
The course includes two exams (midterm and final) assessing students’ understanding of key concepts, terminology, and applied sport management principles. Exams may include a combination of objective questions and short written analysis.
Exams will be based on:
- Readings
- Lectures
- Class discussions
- Case studies and guest speaker content
5. Professional Conduct & Classroom Standards
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with sport industry expectations. This includes respectful communication, preparedness, active listening, and engagement with peers and guest speakers.
6. Communication & Responsiveness
Students are responsible for monitoring university email and Canvas announcements. Clear and respectful communication with the instructor is expected, particularly regarding absences, assignments, or concerns.
7. Academic Integrity & Original Work
All submitted work must reflect the student’s own thinking and effort. Academic dishonesty—including plagiarism, fabrication, or misuse of sources—will be handled in accordance with university policy and may result in failure of the assignment or course.
8. Flexibility & Professional Adaptability
The sport industry is dynamic, and this course may adjust topics, case studies, or activities in response to current events or emerging issues. Students are expected to remain adaptable and engaged as the course evolves.
