Course Description

The course reviews and outlines best practices of implementing strategies to manage the cybersecurity risks that an organization faces. It includes examining cybersecurity frameworks that includes requirements, establishment, operation, monitoring, maintenance, and continual improvement. Learning Outcomes

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), by the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Examine cybersecurity frameworks and discuss the standards, policies, and procedures.
  2. Describe the establishment, operation, monitoring, maintenance, and improvement processes for cybersecurity frameworks.
  3. Analyze international best practices in relation to security frameworks.
  4. Discuss the application of security frameworks to complex organizations.

Course Requirements

Students are expected to actively participate in this seven‑week online course by logging into Canvas regularly, reviewing announcements, and staying current with all deadlines. All assignments, quizzes, discussions, and assessments must be submitted on time. Late work is accepted only in cases of legitimate emergency that are communicated before the due date and may include deductions as outlined in the syllabus. Students should check Canvas Inbox and email frequently and respond to instructor communication. Reliable internet access and the ability to view course materials and submit assignments in standard formats are required. Professional conduct and adherence to netiquette, including clear communication, respectful interaction, and proper grammar, are expected throughout the course. All work must follow SUU’s academic integrity policies.

Course Outline

This course introduces the objectives and benefits of cybersecurity and enterprise frameworks. It covers the requirements, establishment, operation, monitoring, maintenance, and continual improvement of these frameworks, along with best practices for implementation. Frameworks covered include MITRE ATT&CK, NIST CSF, ISO/IEC 27001, CMMC, COBIT, and PCI DSS.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

No late assignments will be accepted.  

Quizzes, discussions, exams, etc. missed because of illness, a university-approved absence, or an absence approved by the instructor in advance will be made up at a time convenient for the instructor. In all other cases, no credit will be awarded for the assignment.

As this is an online course, students are responsible for managing their schedules and ensuring all deadlines are met.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
