Course Description

A hospitality industry finance course that includes financial statements, capital markets, present and future value analysis, decision-making tools, risk and return, and financial strategies. (Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): ACCT 2010 and (MATH 1030 or higher) - Prerequisite Min. Grade: D- Registration Restriction(s): None

Attendance:  (10 points) Class attendance is encouraged.  Attendance points are awarded according to the following scale (one point is awarded for enrolling in the class):

Homework:    (150 points) There will be 10 homework assignments.  Assignments will be posted on Canvas and vary in point value according to difficulty.  Homework assignments will correspond to class topics and are due according to the date posted on Canvas.  No late assignments will be accepted.  Students are to work alone as the assignments and answers on Canvas will be scrambled.  

 

Project:  (50 points) Students will be given some key information and parameters for a new hotel project.  Students will build a pro-forma Statement of Income for the hotel project.  Students will answer multiple choice questions about the project on Canvas and e-mail the instructor the Excel spreadsheet containing their project.  This is a solo project. No group work!

 

Exams:           (150 points) There will be five exams, including the Final.  Each exam is worth 30 points

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
