Course Description

Students will be introduced to the psychological aspects of leadership including culture, ethics, and gender. Students will create and lead effective groups and teams. Students will build an ongoing continuous improvement plan. This course will continue development of the portfolio from the first course in the series. Learning Outcomes

Content


Each week has readings and other learning materials (PowerPoints, videos, websites). Please make sure you read and/or watch the learning materials, in order to do well in the class.


1-Introduction


Please spend a fair amount of time to become acquainted with your colleagues in this class. It is very important that together we become a learning community over the next several weeks. Make your classmates a part of your life as you offer and receive learning.


2- Current Event Papers (x4) -
Four times during the term you will apply course readings in crafting a 3-4 page (double spaced) paper analyzing a current event involving groups, teams, and leadership.


3- Virtual Discussions (x5)  -
Five times during the course, we will meet on W nights at 7:30 to discuss the previous weeks reading. If you show up, having done the readings and participate you will get full points. If you cannot make it, I will provide a recording that you can watch later. If you cannot make it in person you will also be responsible for responding to a number of questions in a short response paper to get full credit. 


4- Group Case Studies (x2) -
Twice during the term you will work with groups that the instructor assigns to complete a PowerPoint/Video response to a case study you have been assigned.


5 - Final Paper -
At the conclusion of the term, you will craft a 7-8 page paper analyzing a team that you are personally involved in. Employing theories learned in class, you will offer your own long term strategy for said team's continued effectiveness.

Assignments are expected to be turned in on time. A ten percent deduction on the final grade will accrue per assignment per 24 hours late up to 5 days late. If you have an emergency come up please, contact me in advance so that we can work something out.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
