Course: MATH 3050-01
Credits: 3
Term: Spring Semester 2026
Department: MATH
CRN: 11311

Course Description

One of a three-course sequence focused on mathematical content knowledge appropriate to the needs of middle and high school teachers. Topics include numbers and operations, ratios and proportions, probability and counting, probability distributions, interpreting statistical data, and linear regression. The discussion of these topics will be focused on developing multiple representations and flexible thinking to aid in being an effective mathematics teacher. (Fall) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): MATH 1210 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C

Required Texts

Students will need an all-access pass to xyzhomework.com.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will have a deep understanding of operations and operation algorithms in various number sets.
  • Students will have a deep understanding of ratios and proportional thinking and ways to model them.
  • Students will have a deep understanding counting principles and their applications to probability.
  • Students will investigate how to design statistical studies and how to choose sampling techniques.
  • Students will be able summarize, represent data, test claims, and draw conclusions from data.

Course Requirements

Student learning will be assessed through homework assignments and exams.

The overall grade will be calculated by the following weighted average:
25%   Assignments
75%   Exams

The semester letter grade will be based on the weighted average above using the following cutoffs:
      A      93%          B-    80%          D+  67%
      A-    90%          C+    77%          D     63%
      B+   87%           C      73%          D-   60%
      B     83%           C-    70%          F   <60%

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

For assignments that are not part of the online homework platform, a maximum of two assignments will be accepted late (within two weekdays of the due date) for full credit.

Late online homework assignments will be accepted only with a valid excuse, and this possibility should be discussed with me prior to the due date except in extreme circumstances.

Make-up exams will be given only with a valid excuse, and this possibility should be discussed with me prior to the exam except in extreme circumstances.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is expected and will be recorded as part of the “assignments” portion of your grade. Attending class is an important part of the learning process and your understanding of the material will suffer if you are not present. If you do miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what material you have missed and what the homework assignments are.

ADA Statement

Students with medical, psychological, learning, or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodations, or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Disability Resource Center, located in Room 206F of the Sharwan Smith Center or by phone at (435) 865-8042. The Disability Resource Center determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of services.

If your instructor requires attendance, you may need to seek an ADA accommodation to request an exception to this attendance policy. Please contact the Disability Resource Center to determine what, if any, ADA accommodations are reasonable and appropriate.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

SUU is operated for the common good of the greater community it serves. The common good depends upon the free search for truth and its free exposition. Academic Freedom is the right of faculty to study, discuss, investigate, teach, and publish. Academic Freedom is essential to these purposes and applies to both teaching and research.
