Course Description

This course focuses on the practical application and best practices of the project management processes outlined in the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® (PMBOK). Consideration of the 12 “Principles of Project Management” will be examined in the context of each of 8 Project Performance Domains. These include: stakeholders, team, developement approach and life cycle, planning, project work, delivery, measurement, and uncertainty. This course offers a critical and comprehensive initiation to the practice of project management, and blends theory with practical examples. This course also prepares students to become certified through PMI with the industry-recognized Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) credential. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Registration Restriction(s): Junior or Senior standing required

Learning Outcomes

We will discuss the basic principles of Project Management, and the role project managers play in accomplishing best business practices. By the completion of this course the student should, at minimum, be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of key terminology and frameworks in project management
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply project management tools for analyzing projects, as well as for assessing the firms’ project management practices
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of how project management contributes to achieving the strategic objectives of the firm
  4. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate ethical decision-making strategies to managing projects
  5. Apply the principles learned in this course in preparation to take the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) exam administered by the Project Management Institute

Course Requirements

Case Studies:  These case studies are meant to help you critically think about and practically utilize the information you have been learning throughout the semester from the Project Management Body of Knowledge. 

Quizzes:  All quizzes are open and can be completed at any time.  Please check for due dates and times.  Additional details are posted in Canvas.

Discussion Board Assignment: You will be required to post two articles/current events/etc. (5 points each) that illustrate Project Management at work in the real world and discuss/explain how these relate to some aspect(s) of the course content.  You must also comment on 5 other individuals' posts (2 points each) throughout the semester.     

PMBOK 7th Edition:  These assignments are meant to help introduce you to the PMBOK 7th Edition resources that are available to you in this course.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

If you have a valid excuse (e.g., a Doctor’s note, university sponsored events, death of a close relative etc.) with documentary proof, you will have an opportunity to makeup an exam or quiz.  Please contact me at the first opportunity you know that you will not be able to meet the deadline so that we can reschedule.

All assignments EXCEPT THE LEARNSMART/CONNECT ASSIGNMENTS and any potential extra credit assignments have a 24-hour grace period for turning in with no penalty (in other words, you will be given full credit for assignments submitted during the grace period). 

HOWEVER.... no assignments will be accepted after the grace period, except under the most dire and serious of circumstances (e.g. the death of an immediate family member).  Computer glitches, problems with Canvas, forgetting, vacations, etc. etc. etc. are not valid excuses.  Please make sure to submit your assignments well in advance of this final cut-off period.  Please also make sure you have submitted the correct file and that file has uploaded correctly when you submit your assignments.  If you do not, they will not be accepted after the final cutoff date and time 

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to visit the Canvas course site on a regular basis. Students should visit the course site at least twice a week to avoid missing announcements and assignments.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
