Course Description

The second course in the aural skills sequence, MUSC 1140, Aural Skills II develops skills in aural perception and sight-reading abilities through harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic dictation, singing, interval recognition, and other methods.

This semester will cover diatonic melodies and intervals, intermediate rhythms, and all diatonic triads.

Required Texts

No text is required for this course.

A workbook is published on Canvas that students will be able to use on electronic devices or print and use in class. They include dictation exercises and sight singing material for exams.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Sight-read diatonic melodies employing Solfege syllables.
  • Write from dictation, diatonic melodies and harmonies.
  • Write from dictation simple and compound rhythms.
  • Recognize diatonic intervals aurally.

Course Requirements

Prerequisite: A grade of C or higher in MUSC 1130 and instructor permission.
Co-requisite: MUSC 1120, Music Theory II
GRADES will be calculated on the following criteria:
  • Dictation Exams 40%
  • Sight Singing Exams 40%
  • Attendance 20%
Grading Scale:
100-93=A 89.99-87=B+ 79.99-77=C+ 69.99-67=D+ Under 60=F
92.99-90=A- 86.99-83=B 76.99-73=C 66.99-63=D
82.99-80=B– 72.99-79=C– 62.99-60=D–

Course Outline


Exams

4 dictation exams will be given in class throughout the term as scheduled. They will include interval recognition, rhythmic dictation, melodic dictation, harmonic dictation, and error detection. The schedule for these exams can be found in Canvas under Assignments, Modules, or the Calendar. I reserve the right to adjust the Calendar at any time as I see fit.

4 sight-singing exams will be given throughout the semester aligning with the dictation exams. These will be given outside of class. I will provide a sign up for each of the 4 tests, and it is the student’s responsibility to sign up for a time and keep the appointment. Exams will be graded using the following scale:

Pitch 30 points
Rhythm 30 points
Intonation 10 points
Solfege 10 points
Fluidity 20 points
Total 100 points

Minor mistakes will receive a 2-point deduction. Major mistakes will receive a 4-point deduction.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

LATE WORK POLICY: In class assignments must be turned in to Canvas by 10:00 a.m. following the class period. Late work will be given a maximum of half points. For students who miss a dictation or sight singing exam, I will allow for a makeup exam the same or following day if requested by the student. By default I will take 20% off before grading. If a student is late to an exam, I will take off points as is necessary. 

Attendance Policy

As this is a skills class, attendance is necessary to master the material. Attendance will be taken each class period. You must attend at least 70% (35/50 minutes) of the class to be counted in attendance. Absences will be excused for illness, serious injury, and death. Students who miss more than 8 classes (4 weeks of the semester) will receive no attendance points.

Classroom Etiquette

Please silence cell phones at the beginning of class. It is very distracting to have cell phones ringing during dictation exercises.

ADA Statement

Students with medical, psychological, learning, or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodations, or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Disability Resource Center, located in Room 206F of the Sharwan Smith Center or by phone at (435) 865-8042. Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
