Course Requirements

Assessment/Evaluation/Grading:

This course will look a little different for each of you (and your groups). This is our chance to follow through with our event plan for Spring 2026
How you'll earn a grade: you will be assessed based on the quality/quantity of work you do. Here are the expectations:

  • Work with your group (and the whole class) on your part of the UoP event
  • Professionalism in communication with each other, outside entities, and me!
  • Quality work that shows retention of learning from the 4740 course
  • Keep a journal/log of your work that connects with prior learning and shows your commitment
  • Complete a peer review for members of your team
  • SUU requires about 45 hours of work per credit hour. That's a week of full time effort + overtime. Let's figure out what that looks like for you and go from there.

I will have a few check-in type assignments throughout the semester to make sure we're meeting the expectations above.

Grade will be determined by your peer review, hours log and journal assignments, and professionalism. You will justify your grade based on feedback from myself and your peers toward the end of the semester.

Format: This class will be an in person, face to face class with an expectation that students will arrive ready to engage in the material for that day. Classes will be essential planning meetings with little lecture - this is a lab after all. Expect to be present, part of discussions, and having read all required material for the day based on the schedule.

Classroom climate and full value contract: I am here to teach, but I am also here to learn. I expect all students to be willing collaborators in the learning process. We have much to learn from one another, and can only do so if we can freely share ideas without fear of judgment from your cohort or your instructor. My expectation is you will respect yourself and others, work hard, show up to class and events on time and ready to learn, be committed to learning and teamwork, and try to have fun.

Acceptable and Unacceptable Use of AI: AI is inherently  “artificial”, and your learning should not be. Please refrain from using AI unless the specific assignment has additional instructions related to AI use. Use of automated systems is a tool, but not replacement for a skill set in critical thinking. Be intellectually curious and cultivate a desire to learn. Shortcuts rarely are.

When assignments allow for the use of AI, all prompts must be shared, and the following will generally apply:
Allowed: Brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, summarizing long readings.
Never Allowed: Generating entire essays, solving problems without understanding, fabricating citations, utilizing AI as an attempt to deceive.

Course Outline

This lab requires at least 45 hours of work as per SUU policy for 1 credit hour:

~10 hours:
Weekly meetings during class time to plan the event, discuss issues with the rest of the class, and create work flow plans for the following week.

~20 hours:
Event prep and work outside of class

~10 hours:
The Event Day

~5 hours
Small group meetings with the instructor to stay on task and on target

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Any late work will not be eligible for full credit without prior written approval.

With ungraded classes, feedback is an essential part of your growth and learning. I set aside time to give feedback, and because of this, all assignments are due by the date/time listed in the class schedule. Failure to turn in assignments on time will reflect your professionalism assessment and likely harm your final grade. In short, ungraded does not give you an excuse to not meet deadlines.

Attendance Policy

This class meets in person once a week, and your presence and participation are essential to your success and the overall learning environment. You are allowed up to 1 free absences over the course of the semester. This is intended to cover things like minor illnesses, travel, or other personal obligations—so I encourage you to use it wisely.

If you find yourself needing to miss more than one class sessions due to illness, family emergencies, or other significant circumstances, please reach out to me as soon as possible. I understand that life can be unpredictable, and I’m willing to work with students who communicate and show commitment to the course.

Please note that excessive absences (more than 1) without communication will affect your ability to keep up in class and will result in a lower grade or difficulty passing. Make-up work is not guaranteed but may be offered in certain situations depending on the nature of the absence and the coursework missed.

If you do not fulfill your role with your group or the class, do not expect a passing grade.

Ultimately, I want you to succeed and stay healthy—physically and mentally—so please keep me in the loop if something comes up.

Course Fees

$7.50 per credit hour
