Course Description

Continuation of SPAN 2010. (Fall, Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): SPAN 2010 - Prerequisite Min. Grade: C- Registration Restriction(s): None General Education Category: Humanities. This is a second-year course that reinforces and adds to many of the major grammatical structures and vocabulary introduced in Spanish 1010 through 2010. We will work on strengthening the core skill areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.

Learning Outcomes

1.     Listening: Understand and derive meaning from face-to-face conversations, routine in-class listening tasks (such as instructions and directions), and various authentic audio/video materials.

2.     Speaking: Express themselves and be understood in uncomplicated communicative tasks and social situations; as well as narrate, describe, and elicit information in multiple tenses.    

3.     Reading: Comprehend the main idea of simple, authentic written materials. Develop the ability to identify contextual clues, such as cognates, to facilitate reading comprehension. 

4.     Writing: Produce simple and coherent written discourse that demonstrates knowledge of basic sentence structure, vocabulary, and verb forms. 

5.     Culture: Gain a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures and develop an awareness of customs, geography, and of the differences/commonalities between traditions and dialects.

Course Outline

The course is divided thematically by unit and includes relevant vocabulary, grammar, and culture:

Unit 16: ¿Cómo se interpretará el mensaje? 

Unit 17: ¿Es necesario que se exploren los estereotipos? 

Unit 18: ¿Te sorprende que un poema pueda expresar la identidad? 

Unit 19: ¿Cómo las experiencias personales definen quiénes somos y en qué creemos?

Unit 20: ¿Bajo la influencia de los influenciadores?

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

All assignments must be submitted by the day and time indicated. No assignments will be accepted after the due date and time without a formal written excuse (ex: a health emergency, accommodations through the Disability Resource Center, etc.). If you are planning to miss a day of class for whatever reason, please make arrangements to submit all necessary assignments ahead of schedule if, due to your planned absence, you will be unable to submit on the actual due date. Note: the only type of assignment that will still be accepted for some credit after the due date and time is the homework within Contraseña.  
 
If you have a family, medical, or personal emergency that makes completing an assignment by the due date and time impossible, please be sure to reach out to me via email as soon as you are able. 

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all class sessions and actively participate in all hours of language instruction. You must be exposed to Spanish and use Spanish in order to learn the language. For that reason, attendance will be taken on a daily basis via Canvas. You are allowed THREE unexcused absences during the entire semester with no effect to your overall average. Additional absences (beyond three) are considered excessive and will be penalized by deducting 1% point per additional absence from your final grade. For example, if you finish the course with a 90% but have missed class 4 times, your final grade will be 89%. If you have a family, medical, or personal emergency that makes completing an assignment by the due date and time impossible, please be sure to reach out to me via email as soon as you are able. While I do not require documentation to excuse the first three absences, I do ask for documentation if, due to your absence, you have missed an assignment deadline (this especially applies to non-Contraseña assignments: exams, etc.). 

Use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Translation Tools

The use of AI (ex: ChatGPT and others) and translation tools and services is strictly prohibited in this class. Any assignment submission deemed unacceptable due to the use of these tools will result in a zero with NO opportunity for resubmission. All work assigned in this course is appropriate for the Intermediate Spanish II level. As such, all assignments must be the student's own work without ANY help from these tools. 

ADA Statement

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Please Note: The use of websites or services that sell essays is a violation of these policies; likewise, the use of websites or services that provide answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests is also a violation of these policies. Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
