This is the second of three 3-credit hour semester courses dealing with auditing: Auditing I (ACCT 4400 undergraduate), Auditing II (ACCT 6400 graduate), and Forensic Accounting (ACCT 6450 graduate).

  • This course (Auditing II ACCT 6400) emphasizes effective auditor judgement, audit sampling techniques (statistical and non-statistical) and related audit working paper preparation, substantive audit procedures and audit working paper generation related to a variety of financial-statement accounts and transaction cycles, and procedures required to wrap up the audit, deliver the audit opinion, and communicate with those charged with governance.  Analysis of the differences between financial auditing and operational auditing is also discussed, as well as other services CPA's offer in the profession beyond Audits such as Reviews, Compilations, Agreed-Upon Procedures, etc.

In conjunction with the above topics, students in this course will also perform case-oriented working paper organization and design assessments related to the following areas a new audit professional will typically be assigned to work during their first three years in the auditing profession:

  • Audit sampling cases: both a statistical sampling case using IDEA data analysis software and a non-statistical sampling case using Microsoft Excel
  • Performing Preliminary Analytics for Audit Planning & Risk Assessment/Strategy
  • Calculating Materiality using three different methods (Benchmark approach, Tiered approach, Layered approach)
  • Performing Cash ending balance audit procedures (fraud risk analysis, confirmations, leadsheets, tie out, etc.)
  • Performing Accounts Receivable and Revenue Recognition ending balance audit procedures (confirmations, Revenue Recognition, valuation/allowance for doubtful accounts)
  • Performing Inventory ending balance audit procedures (observations, cutoff, price testing)
  • Performing Accounts Payable ending balance audit procedures (confirmations, cutoff, subsequent disbursements)
  • Performing Payroll and other accruals ending balance audit procedures (auditor expectations using analytics)
  • Performing Notes Payable ending balance audit procedures (confirmations, interest expense analytics to search for unrecorded liabilities, drafting disclosure requirements)
  • Drafting findings for deficiencies in internal control & communicating with those charged with governance
  • Performing Audit completion and wrap up procedures (subsequent events, attorney letters, final analytics and evaluation of results/SOAP schedule, representation letters, communications with those charged with governance.

Required Texts

  •  Required Text: McGraw Hill Connect online access to Auditing & Assurance Services, by Messier, Glover, Prawitt, 12th Edition Inclusive Access (requried).  Each student is required to have their own Connect account since this is where all Homework, Quizzes, and Exams are located and submitted for credit.  This course is enrolled in Inclusive Access (IA) and you will fall into 1 of 2 groups that will determine what you need to to about the textbook:

    Group 1:
You took Audit I at SUU and your 540 day Connect online access to the Audit and Assurance Textbook by Messier in Connect doesn't expire until after the END of this semester.  If you meet BOTH of these criteria, when you get the email about opting in you don't need to do anything because your previously paid access is still active (we did this strategically so that you could take both courses while only paying for the textbook once if you complete them both in the proper time window).  All you will need to do to access Connect is to click on the first Connect Assignment in Canvas, which is the Earthwear Clothiers Intro Case, and follow the prompts to quickly link your Connect account to Canvas.

    Group 2:
You did not have Audit I at SUU, or your previous 540 day Connect access to this specific textbook/course expires before the END of the semester. That means you haven't paid for the textbook like those in Group 1, or your access will expire before the semester is over, so when you get the email from the bookstore all you need to do is simply select the "opt-in" option for this course and the cost will be charged to your SUU tuition and fees account at a discounted rate (30-40%) due to your enrollment in inclusive access for this course. One you opt-in, due to inclusive access you will have access to everything in the course from day 1 and will not need to purchase anything separately.  All you will need to do to access Connect is to click on the first Connect Assignment in Canvas, which is the Earthwear Clothiers Intro Case, and follow the prompts to quickly link your Connect account to Canvas.

    • VERY IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GROUP 2:  Note that Connect does give you a grace period for the first few weeks of the semester, so if you're in Group 2 it may seem like your access is fine at first, but that grace period will expire and you will lose your access to Connect about the time exams start.  Any missed assignments or exams due to this issue will be graded as 0's as it's your responsibility to make sure you are properly set up at the beginning of the semester, so make sure to opt-in properly at the beginning of the semester with the email and/or the bookstore so that this doesn't happen to you if you're in Group 2.  If you want to make sure you have paid access that wont expire, contact the bookstore and they can help you.

  • Required Resource - Becker CPA Exam Preparation software AUD section (required - free): Online access to Becker CPA Review platform. Access is free for SUU students and we will have periodic Becker videos and assessment quizzes to help you prepare for the CPA exam. See instructions in Canvas.

  • Required Resource - Caseware IDEA data analysis software & workbook (required - free): We have partnered with data analytics software company Caseware to receive their academic version of IDEA data analysis software to use in this course free of charge for SUU students.  This software is used by firms in industry for trend analytics, fraud analytics, and audit sampling and will provide you with real world experience in performing these audit procedures with common audit data analytics software. It is available on the computers in BUS 116 on campus and I will also provide a link for you to download on your personal computer to complete the assignments at home. *Important Note:* IDEA does not work with Mac computers, so if you have a Mac you'll need to borrow a PC from a family member or friend, or use the lab computers on campus in BUS 116, or we'll need to work with SUU IT in advance to set you up with a remote desktop option.  Any of those three options will work. There are two case studies in the course that use this software.

  • Required Resource - EYARC Experiences online AI software platform (required - free): with AI becoming more prevalent and more effective in the accounting profession, Big 4 Public Accounting Firm EY (Ernst & Young) has developed a website called EYARC Experiences to provide engaging audit and accounting experiences using AI simulations of real-world scenarios.  We will be using their online platform to help you gain an interactive hands-on experience of what it's like to perform audit procedures like you will at an audit client in the profession and help you develop the required professional skills to gather information and evaluate results.

  • Access to a computer or laptop with a Webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection: The exams in this course require that an online proctor called Proctorio integrated with McGraw Hill Connect be used (free for SUU students).  Proctorio requires a webcam, microphone, and a stable internet connection in order for you to take your exams, so all students are required to have access to these items in order to complete coursework.

Course Outline

Homework

You will have 11 Homework Assignments (one for each chapter) to help you practice the concepts taught in the chapter material.  They include homework problems from the textbook and other items provided by the professor as discussed in class.  All homework will be completed online through use of the “Connect” Accounting software and is due as noted in Canvas.

Chapter Quizzes

You will have 12 chapter quizzes (one for each chapter) covering the chapter material for each chapter.  They  will be available in Connect via direct link in each Canvas module and will be due as noted in Canvas.  Quizzes will generally be done at the end of each week during class time for live classes.  The quiz answers will open up right after the due date/time so that you can use them as study materials for the exams.

Becker CPA Prep Study Modules & Quizzes

We have partnered with Becker CPA Prep to provide you with a free version of their CPA exam prep software for the Audit (AUD) section. We will perform several activities during the course that are designed to give you some experience in what it will be like to sit for the CPA exam.  Instructions on how to access this free software are provided in the Modules section of Canvas.

You will have the following activities in Becker:

  • 13 Becker CPA prep Reading/Homework Modules & practice questions covering the same topics the chapter materials cover to help prepare you for the CPA Exam.  These Becker Modules are due as noted in Canvas, and will be accessed through your free Becker CPA prep platform (instructions provided in Canvas).
  • Three short Extra Credit Becker CPA Prep Quizzes: These short quizzes are designed to help you take the next step in CPA exam preparation by providing a short practice CPA quiz experience worth a small number of extra credit points, and will prepare you for the Becker CPA simulation  graded quiz at the end of the semester.
  • One Becker CPA Audit Section Simulated Mini Exam:  This graded quiz is the next step in your CPA preparation progression and is designed to give you a "dry run" of taking the CPA exam in a classroom setting before you spend all the money required to take the real CPA exam.   You will be required to complete 30-40 multiple choice CPA Exam questions and three simulations.  The 12 Becker Homework Modules and the 3 Extra Credit practice quizzes will serve as your study materials for this graded simulated CPA Mini Exam,  so you'll have plenty of review materials to help you prepare.

Memos/Writing Assignments

You will have 2 memo/writing assignments in this course. The first one is a simple, short Biographical sketch consisting of completing a short Google survey with questions telling the instructor a little bit about your life, interests, etc. to help the professor get to know you better.  The professor will provide his own Bio sketch as an example.  The second one is a brief one - two page memo on Auditor Judgment Biases and how we can identify them and prevent them in our work.

Case Studies & Projects

You will have 20 real world case studies related to the chapter material that are designed to provide you with experience performing the audit procedures that you will typically do in your first year in the audit profession.  These Case studies, along with all instructions and necessary supplemental material will be provided in the Canvas modules.  Every student is required to do their own case study in order to ensure you are properly prepared for the profession.  Video examples to walk you through the case study to help you get started are provided in each Canvas module, and suggested solutions will open in each Canvas module after the due date has passed for you to check your work.

Exams

You will have 4 exams in this course.  The exams will be closed-book and individual effort. The exams will be located online in Connect and will be similar to the assigned homework exercises and problems including multiple-choice, true-false, fill-in-the-blank, calculations, and other question types to ensure adequate breadth.  Exams are required to be proctored online through the approved proctor integrated into Connect called Proctorio (free to SUU students).  Exams taken using the online proctor require you to have a webcam, microphone, and a reliable/stable internet connection, and may be taken anywhere, anytime 24/7 during the open testing window and will generally be due by 11:59pm Mountain Time on the date noted in Canvas unless otherwise indicated, so make sure to make the time adjustment wherever you are when taking your exams. For live classes, the professor generally will not hold class the day of the exam in order to ensure sufficient availability in the testing center and to allow students sufficient time to take the exam.  You should take a calculator, a blank scratch paper to work out problems, and a pen/pencil into each exam.

Use of Generative AI and Other Tools (ChatGPT, etc.)

Generative AI and other tools (ChatGPT, Grammarly, etc.) can enhance your learning when used properly and when understanding the limits of each tool.  These tools often “hallucinate” and provide false information, so be careful in their use as your grade will be significantly affected by any incorrect submissions.  Using these tools to brainstorm to get you started on an assignment, or to provide additional perspective and potential additional resources for further research can be very useful to your learning. However, using these tools (ChatGPT, Chegg, Coursehero, etc.) to just copy and paste is inappropriate and will result in docked grades and potential firing in your future job if you don’t learn to use the tools correctly.  Please make sure to verify all sources directly to ensure correctness, revise them into your own words and cite the tool and/or the direct source as your information source. Claiming AI generated content as your own work is plagiarism and will be penalized as noted in the plagiarism and academic integrity/misconduct policy noted in this syllabus.
