Course Description

Introduction to Pathophysiology for the health sciences student. Using a systematic approach to cellular and then organ system changes, students will gain an understanding of physical changes and methods of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating health alterations. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0 or above) must be earned in this course before it can be counted in a biological science major or minor or as a prerequisite for any other biology course. Learning Outcomes

Gain Factual Knowledge and Fundamental Principles of how the human body works:
  • gain a basic understanding of the functions of key body systems in response to damage/disease
  • develop a basic understanding of scientific terminology as it relates to human pathophysiology
  • understand the homeostatic mechanisms working in each system

Learn to Apply course material:
  • understand how the various systems function together to sustain life and how problems within any system can affect the whole body
  • be able to apply physiological mechanisms to changes in body function associated with diseases/disorders

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

  • The Quizzes, Exams, and Assignments have specific due dates.
  • Quizzes will be open for 24 hours for you to take them.
  • Exams will be open for 48 hours for you to take them.
  • All Exams/Quizzes/Assignments are due by 11:59 pm on the given due date.
  • The Comprehensive Final Exam will be open during the last week of the semester and is due by 5pm on the last day.
  • Optional assignments/homework will be given throughout the semester. If you complete all of the HW assignments they will account for 15% of your course grade.These HW assignments are graded, but are NOT required. If you complete and turn them in, the points will count for/against your total score. If you do not turn them in, they will not be counted against you. You may do as many or as few as you like. NO HW ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THEIR RESPECTIVE DUE DATE.

Attendance Policy

  • Online gives you the advantage of fitting the course around your schedule more. However, without set class times, you need to be diligent about working on the course. You must set up a schedule for working on the class and stick to it.

Grading

Grade will be determined from:             - (4) Module Exams (50-80 pts)
                                                               - (1) Comprehensive Final Exam
                                                               - (5-6) 10-15 point Quizzes
                                                               - Optional HW Assignments

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33).
