Course Description

The lab to accompany CHEM 1220. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0 or above) must be earned in this course before it can be counted in a physical science major or minor or as a prerequisite for any other course. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Co-requisite(s): CHEM 1220 Registration Restriction(s): Intensive English Program majors may not enroll

Learning Outcomes

This course has the following specific objectives:

  • To educate students to apply course material by thinking independently and critically about chemistry.
  • Students will gain and demonstrate an understanding of chemistry, its principle concepts and reoccurring themes.
  • Students will be able to understand the terminology, classifications and trends in general chemistry

Gain knowledge of the physical and natural world, problem solving and quantitative literacy.

Course Requirements

Attendance: Due to the nature of lab work, attendance in mandatory. If you are unable to make it to lab make sure that the instructor is aware of it and see if alternative arrangements can be made. It is better to make arrangements before the scheduled lab then to try and make up a lab after it has occurred. If you fail to show up for lab or just forget to come you cannot make up the work.

EQUIPMENT:

Pencils will be used for all work in the laboratory. Safety goggles will not be provided, but are REQUIRED at all times in the lab. Any student without safety glasses will be asked to leave the laboratory, receiving a zero for that day's exercise, until he is properly equipped to continue. NO KIDDING! Safety glasses/goggles are available in the bookstore.

Lab attire should afford you complete coverage of the lower extremities of your body. No open toed shoes or shorts will be allowed in lab. If you are not properly attired you will be asked to return home and change. Once you are properly dressed you may resume lab work

This lab serves as a compliment to the lecture course and we will investigate the following topics:
Boiling Points of alcohol
Vitamin C Titration 
Freezing Points of cyclohexane solutions
factors that affect rates
the rate law of an iodine clock reaction 
Equilibrium systems
Acids and Bases
Buffer capacity
Acid-Base Titrations
Voltaic Cells
Electrolytic Cells

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

The general policy is that you have until the next lab period to complete your assigned lab and then one additional lab period the lab will be worth half of its graded value. After the second lab period, the assignment will not be graded. Situations of illness etc. will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Attendance Policy

This is a hands on laboratory experience. You need to be present to perform the lab. If you have to be absent, arrangements can be made, but they require advanced notice as the collection of materials for lab is time consuming.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
