Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Explain information systems security and its effect on people and businesses.
  2. Define information security, information assurance, and technical security terminologies including cryptography, authentication, access control, network, application, and physical security
  3. Explain security countermeasures and procedures that fit within each of the seven domains of Information Technology
  4. Author a basic security policy
  5. Perform activities to strengthen security of typical workstations and networks; such as encrypting files, improving passwords, and evaluating the security of operating systems and wireless networks.
  6. Discuss the psychological, legal, regulatory, and ethical dimensions of information assurance and security
  7. Compare and contrast different types of cybersecurity education and certifications

Course Requirements

Quizzes

You will have 7 quizzes in this course. Each quiz will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions, and may also contain some fill-in-the blank, matching, or short essay style questions. You will have 20-30 minutes, depending on quiz length and question types, and one attempt to complete each quiz. Quizzes must be submitted no later than the assigned due date. You may use your textbook or notes to complete the quiz.
Homework

You will have 7 homework assignments during the semester.  Each will focus on a different practical or theoretical aspect of cybersecurity.  Each will take about 1-2 hours to complete.
Discussion

There is an introductory discussion that must be completed the first week, which consists of you introducing yourself.  It will be worth 25 extra credit points, and must be completed the first week of class.  I've posted an example, please introduce yourself in whatever detail you feel comfortable with, but do try to let me, and your classmates, see you as a real person.

Exams
This course has three exams, the first covering chapters 1-8, the second 9-16, and the third (final) covering 17-28.  All are open-book & open notes.  Each is worth 100 points.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Late Work Policy:

  • Quizzes and Exams are due at the date and time indicated on Canvas, no quizzes will be accepted after their due date. 
  • Discussions must also be submitted on time, since all need to participate in a discussion. 
  • Homework assignments may be submitted up to 72 hours late, a 10% penalty will be assessed for each 24 hours or any fraction thereof that an assignment is late.
In truly exceptional situations, like medical emergencies/death in the family, I'm happy to work with you to change due dates, etc.  Contact me as soon as possible to let me know, and we'll work something out.  I reserve the right to request verification of such situations.  However, other things like a major project at work and similar issues that can be avoided by not waiting until right before the due date will not be acceptable excuse for late work.

The only extra credit available for this course is the introductory discussion, which must be completed during the first week of class.

 Given that this is an online course, your attendance will be measured by your participation and completion of course activities and assignments.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
